"TANGERINE" (C20 to K10) (LWB to SWB) (CST/MOD) (5.3)
TANGERINE (living reflection from a dream). So I've owned a lot of cool cars, drove' em, traded' em, bolted bigger engines in them, sold them, but I've never actually "built" a car or truck. Man this site is just full of off the wall cool builds!! I thought I'd try my hand at it.
I've always loved the 69-72 Chev/GMC pick ups. The one my Grandfather had was a pretty plain Jane truck but it was awesome to ride in. I found this truck on craigslist, it was in Richland, WA. about 120 miles away from where I live. I knew I was going to buy this one from a block and a half away. I'd looked at so many in my price range (I have very little $) and this was incredibly straight (and rust only in the usual places) for the money ($1100). http://img191.imageshack.us/img191/1250/dsc03938nm.jpg, http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/535/dsc04163xr.jpg |
Re: "TANGERINE" (C20 to K10) (LWB to SWB) (CST/MOD) (5.3)
I drove the truck for about a year and a half as a daily driver as well as driving it the 120 miles home with no problems, and took it camping, fishing, hunting and mountain biking. It smoked some, but performed admirably.

Because I have this crazy idea burning a hole in my head. Which is where my 2001 GMC Yukon comes in.

Yeah, I bought the Yukon from our local wrecking yard. I paid $3400 for it and so far I've sold all the doors (except the rear lift gate) and the rear seats. That made me $1400 so I'm only in the Yukon about $2000. I should be able to sell about another $1000 in leftover parts from the Yukon and the 70 C20. http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/2601/dsc03879w.jpg |

Was the PO really bad at backing up? Not sure I understand that rear bumper, but this looks interesting....

The po said the truck was originally purchased in, and spent most of it's life in Seattle. So the rear bumper is probably a "self defense device". If you've ever been there then you know what I'm talking about (those drivers are nuts). |

Boy do the old chevys and GMC's ever come cheap in the U.S it seems. You should see the junk 1100.00 dollars buys in canada

The truth is I took the Yukon apart last year in anticipation of this build, then I found out the repair shop I work for was going to move. I didn't want my part's spread all over and lost so I put the build on hold till we got settled, in our new digs. I started back up again a couple of months ago, and then found this site ( I sincerely apologize for my ignorance) and I just kinda sat back and watched and learned how this site works. So now I'm trying to lay out what I've done so far. Thanks again for the encouraging input. :metal: |

Have you checked out the wheel base and frame rail height?
Posted via Mobile Device[/QUOTE] Hey 68 TT, Awesome job on .45 ACP, I didn't realize you were in Spokane. :cf: Yeah I checked the wheel base before I bought the Yukon. A friend of mine who is really big into these trucks told me the wheel base on a shortbox is 115 inches. When I told him the wheelbase on the Yukon was 116 inches he got pretty excited, he said a lot of guy's move their rear axle back an inch to make it look better in the wheel well. As it sits I have 6 feet 4 inches from the back of the cab to the front of the rear bumper,,,so it should turn out well. The dip in the frame rail (where the cab sits) worried me. The frame rails on the 67 to 72 trucks are pretty flat (not much dip). That's why I went with the Yukon over a newer shortbox pick up frame, less dip (flatter). It looks like it should all work out. Here's some more angles. Thanks http://img94.imageshack.us/img94/6118/dsc04855u.jpg, http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/6111/dsc04853rq.jpg |
Re: "TANGERINE" (C20 to K10) (LWB to SWB) (CST/MOD) (5.3)
It's good to know the wheelbases are so close. I am going to pick up a wrecked Tahoe as a drivetrain donor eventually for my 4x4 project. I was just going to do a driver side drop front axle swap but may look into doing the entire frame swap similar to what you are doing instead.
How high above the rest of the frame are the arches over the axle? |
