wiring question - non auto specifc

Have a 12v motor. Specifically a trolling motor. It has three wires power/ground and a 3rd wire for 1/2 speed or full speed (assume).

Problem I have is that all the wires are same color. And I am extending the harness. All OHM out as connected on circuit together.

Im assuming in this scenario it makes no real difference as to wiring in terms of damaging motor ?

1 wire will be +ve
1 wire will be -ve
1 wire will be for 1st speed (1/3rd voltage). - blue

Full speed is the direct 12v .
slow speed is the otehr wire with only 4v.

So guessing ? The only thing that can go wrong by applying wires and testing is if the motor goes in reverse ? eg -ve and +ve wires reversed etc ?

Or that slow speed would be full speed etc ......

IF thats not the case ...... how do I dentify which wire belongs to what circuit ...... I tried supplying a singal 12v to 1 wire - but they all end up reading 12v .... which makese sense since all 3 are on teh same circuit per the fact they all OHM out the same.

thoughts ?

Would think that if you end up connecting the two different speed wires to +12v and -12v that would be a direct short. Seems odd that at least one wire does not have a stripe or ribs on it to designate the ground. What is the brand of the motor?

My son-in-law is a boat mechanic. I've sent him a link to this thread. Maybe he'll know the solution and post it for you..

thanks guys sorry missed the updates here ^^^

I ended up just stripping her down to find the correct wires and then rewiring/sheathing the whole unit ..... was just trying to avoid at first.

appreciate it
