Weatherstripping Question: BOTH doors or Just Drivers Side?

1 Attachment(s)
APstGuy and I were having a conversation on Friday night, regarding the weatherstipping on our trucks. Neither of us has weatherstripping on the top of our passenger side door. I said to him "Mine fell off, I need to repalce it." He said to me "No, factory there never was any on the passenger side, only drivers side." Who is right? Is it there factory, or not?
Here's a picture of what I'm talking about...

Mine goes all the way around from the factory. One big piece on both doors.

I think you're mistaking the piece on the CAB, that goes around the door, with this piece in the picture. That's what APstGuy said is the weatherstripping on both doors, and that the piece on my drivers side door is just for good measure (but factory)

i've never seen it on teh door before.

I have it on top and partway down each side on both doors and it is factory.

shavedchevy 05-04-2004 05:48 PM

I have never seen that before either. Where can I get it from? My new weatherstripping sucks and every time it rains I have so sit on a wet seat in my truck. Doh!!!!

mhicks 05-04-2004 05:54 PM

You can get it from LMC. I actually bought mine at O'Reillys Auto Supply.

shavedchevy 05-04-2004 06:50 PM

Yeah I just looked through their book. Thanks

Neither my 86' or 87' have weather stripping around the actual doors. :)

Mine don't either. Was this an option? Anyone have any part #'s??

76sierraclassic 05-04-2004 11:58 PM

My 76 Sierra Classic has the pieces of on both doors that goes down to about the bottom of the glass as well as the piece that goes all the way around the door opening on the cab.

My 77 has it on both doors. Since it is all new, I have no idea if it came that way though...

I think it was only on the earlier trucks. Pre 1980 or so maybe?

Thats what I'm starting to think. If so, why did they stop? The doors are the same in all years so why stop? Maybe they decided that it didn't do very much for keeping the elements out? Just wondering..

Grim Reaper 05-05-2004 11:50 AM

That was a late 70's deal. It was to try and quite up wind noise.
Has one of the doors been replaced or repaired? I bet the passenger door is no original. As near as I can tell it ended about 80. Started about 76 We were think at CK5.
Never seen the seal listed anywhere in the aftermarket.

mhicks 05-05-2004 11:50 AM

I think in '74 they started putting drip edge above the door and they thought there was no need for it. But I think they kept putting the weatherstripping on them for a few years after they installed drip edge.

Jonboy 05-05-2004 12:34 PM

My 73 had the drip moldings. It is possible someone added them somewhere along the line, but it would be weird. My truck was about as base model as it got, down to the cardboard dash pad. Either way, they came right back off.

mhicks 05-05-2004 12:41 PM

According to the LMC catalogue it started in '74 but it also says they can be installed on '73. I have a Super Cheyenne '73 and it doesn't have them.

shavedchevy 05-05-2004 05:44 PM

LMC sells them through the years of 74-83. They should fit any year shouldn't they. It also looks like they use screws to hold them on.....would this be a problem if the doors didn't come equipped with them in the first place?

76sierraclassic 05-05-2004 10:27 PM

I know this is not the parts board, but I just found this on ebay if anyone actually needs some of this weatherstripping.

Seems like those of yall that shave the drip rails would want them to help move the water away instead of it dripping inside the door and possibly dripping inside the cab

Jonboy 05-06-2004 02:51 PM

I shaved mine because I knew the truck would never stay outside, so worrying about the water dripping inside was not a big concern. The new owners keep it inside as well. I plan on leaving the drip rails on my 87, as it is the DD right now.
