Eaton Spring Perches

was starting to go through rear end today to figure out parts needed and noticed i might have a problem on my spring perches. as seen in the picture below one side has a stud sticking out and one side just a shallow hole. perhaps this is suppose to be like this not sure but doesnt look right to me. maybe the stud on the drivers side will come out? also the plates shown measure 5/8" thickness, i think i read they come factory with these right? overall the whole setup dont look like it would hold differential tight so if someone could clue me in on problem id appreciate.or if someone knows where i can locate the new spacers would be nice.

It looks like there was a spacer between the perch and the spring, and the centering pin in the spacer rotted out, and stuck in the perch. The passenger (Right side) is normal. Different thickness spacers can be bought at most off road shops.

ok well next question is the hole in the perches for locating pin should be what depth? i kinda got a feeling the other one busted off down in the hole too as its pretty hollow hole there. i went out and tried a stud puller to no avail on the stud sticking out to no avail. looks like its gonna really fight coming out, prob good chance its gonna bust off down in there. if anyone knows what diam and depth the holes in the perches are suppose to be let me know so i can start working on a fix, i know i could weld new perches on but not wanting to do that as everyone i know who has suddenly have vibration problems and plus thats too much for my mig welder so would have to hire it out.

Don't have a diff handy to measure. You could get a new spring pack center bolt and measure it for a starting reference. Or measure yours if in good shape. I might have some old perchs I cut off to measure, have to check when I get a chance.

This Eaton perch center hole was rusted to the size of the old spring pin. When I turned it over it looked like it went straight though. I hit it with a hammer and the rust fell out. This spring pack center pin is @1/2"W and @ 3/8"L measured with ruler, with calipers 0.55"W and 0.36"L, The perch center hole will be a little larger. Hope this helps.

yeah thanks helps alot. got the whole picture now on what i need to do. now if i can just get that other stud out :)

On my 70 that had the "spacers" I threw them away because of the rust, the pins didn't come out but were almost rusted away. The 71 and 72 frames had a different spring hanger at the front of the rear spring that gave about as much lift as the spacer.

ok ive made some measurements and looks like i need these spacers or the back gonna be a little lower on my lift, one inch spacers should work ok but ive searched for last 3 hours and cant seem to find. truckman.com had them but they said cant buy them less i can sign credit card bill in person, rofl so i definitely dont recommend that place if looking for deals on the net. anyone know of anywhere else to get these off the net? most places it seems only have 2" and larger.

The only place I have seen for a 1" is offroad design. They have a 1" spacer that can be used to offset your rear axle or just to lift it normal.. Zero rate lift |
thanks for the link looks like that would work. if i cant find the regular spacers anywhere i guess thats what ill end up with. finally got that stud out today. :) looks like next i need to locate seals for this thing. i would have never imagined parts for a 70 chevy would be this aggravating to find. ive restored lots of 60s muscle cars and never had near the problems ive had on this project. after this project i never wanna see a drum brake again as i spent 5 years to get my brake problems solved. not much left original on truck. body is a c20, engine not original, front differential not original , i think transfer case, rearend,tranny and steering box is only thing left of what i started with lol
