no brake lights

would a bad turn signal switch cause the brake lights to be inoperable? everything works except the brake lights. brake light switch is good. ground is good (i think). does the brake light circuit run to the column after the switch?

the white wire from the brake sw goes to the column

I had this problem and it was the column plug not making good contact. If I remember right it is one of the pins on the end of the plug.

In one of my trucks the brake switch plug was faulty. I cut it out and wired in a new setup. Are you getting power to the other side of the brake switch? How about to the rear harness plug in?

Check the ground where the tail light housings bolt on to the body to see if the screws are corroded.

thanks for the input................

i removed the plug from the switch and used a jumper between the 2 terminals (bypassing the switch).....still nothing. no, i'm not getting brake light power to the rear harness.

one reason i'm suspecting the signal indicator is a week or two ago i had a few wisps of smoke and an electrical smell coming from the column. went away quickly and everything seemed to work so i didn't worry about it. thought it might be related to my horn that has never worked. didn't check the brake lights after that episode............

Sounds like it is time for a new turn signal switch.
When i was faced with this, I looked at the crappy design of the stock column and said screw it...$30 later I was installing a van tilt.
