Tripping over my trip odometer.

Has anyone ever had to replace their trip odometer? I have a 1993 Z-71, My trip odometer has been reading 9 miles for the past three years. I wanted to replace the trip odometer by itself, but I hit a snag. I called all three of our local chevy houses and they all ticked me off. They said I "Had" to have the entire instrument cluster rebuilt and I had no other option but to bring it in to them so they could rebuild the cluster for "only" $550. I personally feel that is outrageous. Does anyone know a shortcut for me to use to get this stupid little rotating barrel of numbers to work without taking it to a Chevy dealership?

The dealer removes the speedo and sends it elsewhere for repair.

Most dealers marks up the sublet repair price by at least 100%.

The repair shops, that repair automotive radios, are the same shops that repair the speedometers for the dealers here in Minnesota. I would look through the phone book and make some calls. I don't think the dealers will tell you where they are sending them for repair.

Good luck

So is the Trip Odometer part of the Speedo assembly???

The trip odometer and total odometer unit, are a separate system from the speedo. I don't know if you can buy them separately

Go to the junk yard and buy a whole dash cluster.

I totally agree with Phantom, go to the junk yard and get a used one. Either swap out the entire cluster, or try your hand at replacing only the odometer/trip.

The main Odometer and trip odometer are usually driven by one stepper motor, if the
Main Odometer is working then it just may be dirt or debris in one of the Trip Odo
gears or a loose trip odo gear that is not meshing with the other.
If you remove the Instrument Cluster and open it, you can clean and check
for meshing gears. (tyou may also take advantage and do some cleaning to
the graphics as dust has entered cluster during use).
CAREFUL when handling Instrument Cluster as this is static sensitive, so avoid
walking on carpets and synthetic clothes when handling.

Post what you end up doing.. Our trip meter has been sitting at 9/10's forever. You can reset it and it'll go back up to 9/10's and stop..

Same problem here as "spectre".
But now my trip o meter does not move - it stayed at zero on my last reset.
I was also told to remove the cluster and open it up.
i was told a gear may be out of wack.
I have not tried to fix. let me know what happens. i'll post if beat you to it.

If the trip odo works until reaching 9/10 then the problem is as I described:
either a debri that is trapped between gear teeths or a gear that doesn't mesh correctly and it locks up the trip odo, cleaning the gears (air or small brush) or adjusting the spring that holds up the odo wheels wil fix it. It's easy, hardest part is to remove the cluster from the I.P. but even that it is not big deal.
