Selling my truck...

I'm selling my truck here in a day or two and was wondering about doing up a bill of sale. First off, do both the seller and buyer get a copy of the bill of sale? And what should be on it? I'm in washington state if that makes any difference.

Your best bet to get the correct information is to call your local court house. They will be able to tell you what to do. Good luck.

Here in Washington all you have to do is write up on a piece of paper the date and how much you sold it for. Something like:
I, joe schmow, sold a 1969 c-10 chevrolet pickup to, Clyde Barker for $1500.00. on this day June 6th 2004.
Then you sign it and the buyer signs it. He takes that piece of paper into the department of licensing.
I didn't get one from the guy that sold us our blazer, so I wrote up my own- and signed it and tole the lady at the DMV that it was a parts truck and that I only paid $500 for it. Saved me some $$ when I put the title in my name.

Yes as they both said above, the bill of sale is a protection for you as the seller, and also the buyer. It will protect you if they buyer does not change the title over in a timely manner, and the vehicle would be involved in a crime, whether it be tickets or actual criminal. Be sure you sign AND "Date" the title, don't play the "Give me some time to change the title over" Game...

How's Spokane doing anyway ??? I left there in 88....

Thanks for the responses. As for Spokane, thigs are doing good. As for 1988, I was only 2 years old so I wouldn't know how it is now compared to then. :)

Help your buyer out.....Use the Declaration of Value available on the internet site.

Without it they try to use a price guide for the tax value, which is generally higher.

I have the file available if you would like me to email it to you. Simply print it out and send it along with the buyer.

An example last summer I sold a gentleman a Harley at $5800.00 (without the paper), an hour later he was back with the form to have me sign. They said the computer showed the unit worth $8900.00 and wanted sales tax on the higher amount.

Usually its a good idea that the buyer and seller have a copy of the transaction. And you want to report it to the DMV as a sale with the same info. Which can be done over the internet now.

Let me know if you would like the file.

One good idea if your buying a used vehical (leagally works up here anyway) is to get the seller to write on the bill of sale "WITH NO LEANS OR MONEY OWING" that way if say the owner or previous owner/s had outstanding monies owing on it they MUST go after THEM and they can't touch your vehical. There have been many cases that haved turned VERY ugly over this up hear I've heard of. You might want to look into it for future purchases. Doug
