nos or repo rear bumper. is there a noticable differance
hey again, i have an oppertunity to buy a nos rear chrome sport fleet bumper for twice the cost of a repo. has anybody compared the differance in quality side by side ? do ya think its worth it?? thanks john from jersey

i would if i had the extra money, i have my original front bumper on my 67, its heavy, and very solid, my rear sport bumper is nice looking but very light and with a guy on each end you can almost twist the thing, i guess if i dont get hit ill be fine but i dont think it would do a whole heck of a lot if i got rear ended

Chrome looks cheap on the repop bumpers. I got a front and rear bumper from a dealer. The chrome looks real thin and cheap. I'm going to pull them off after the car show season and get them re-chromed. There is a decal on the back saying they are triple plated. I think the decal is lying. You would be better off buying a good used one and taking it to a chrome shop. Buy the NOS......You will be way happier with the quality.

THE LAST BUMPER I HAD PLATED (ALMOST 8 YEARS AGO) COST ME $175. I PUT REPO BUMPERS ON EVERY TRUCK I BUILD AT A COST OF $100 & AM VERY HAPPY WITH THEM. SIDE BY SIDE COMPASISON.... ACTUALLY THE REPO BUMPERS HAVE BETTER LOOKING CHROME & LAST EVERY BIT AS LONG AS THE G.M. ONES. I'M NO FAN OF REPOPPED STUFF BUT I WOULDN'T WASTE MY MONEY ON NOS BUMPERS. :D :D :D :D JOHN |
thanks guys , i had to let it go. it ended up going for over 300 shipped not that its not worth it but alittle to rich for me right now. i tried but was out bid. oh well hope a member got it. saving my money for the truck meet in carlise pa aug 6,7,8.

Could'nt agree with you more John, unless its an absolute #matching spotless original show truck, why waste the extra funds

YEP .. THE ONES THAT I HAVE BOUGHT LOOK GREAT (EVEN BETTER THAN THE ONES I HAD RECHROMED) & IF I GOT A BAD ONE I WOULD SEND IT BACK IN A HEARTBEAT. AS FAR AS NOS GOES.... YOUR STILL LOOKING AT CHROME THATS BEEN ON THERE FOR 32 TO 36 YEARS. MAYBE IT'S OK & MAYBE IT'S NOT. ASK SHAWN AT RICKS PICKUP PARTS ABOUT THE NOS TAILGATE HE BOUGHT THATS AT LEAST A 1/4" OUT OF SQUARE & UNUSABLE. :D :D JOHN |

I'm in the process of testing out the 5 year warranty with my bumper right now. (waiting to hear back from vendor) The one shown is a Triplus and is about 2 years old and as you can see, the chrome is failing on the top. Thousands of dots and a bit rough if you run your hand over it. Appears to be too thin of chrome as mentioned :bs:
Obviously not just a fluke as the front one (also made by Triplus) is looking the same way! It's over 4 years old but since I bought it from a different place, I still have to try getting a replacement for that one. :banghead: When they are new, they are primo looking but don't seem to last too long. My truck is daily driven but well taken care of. I'm hoping they corrected this problem and I get 2 from the good batch this time. |
My bro just installed a new Triplus rear bumper. When he tightened the attaching bolts(by hand, short box wrench) the chrome cracked around the bolt holes. If you are gonna sell it, buy the Taiwan crap, but if you are gonna keep it longer than a year, go NOS. Brian

I picked up a complete factory rear bumper with all the brackets and bolts, for $50. I plan to have both front and rear bumpers re-chromed. I know it's an expense, but I'm not in a hurry and they still look decent enough on a 35 year old truck.
I guess that's why I see chromed bumpers, and then the "show quality" chrome bumpers. If the metal isn't heavy enough, then the quality will suffer more if the chrome is thin. So, what is the normal routine? I hear that it's to buff the metal until it is absolutely smooth, then it gets plated with copper. After that is buffed, it gets plated with nickel. Finally, after the nickel is buffed, it gets chromed, then buffed again. Anybody know for sure? |
My repo back bumper has been on for about three years now and hasn't started to peel or rust but there are little dimples around where the bolts are, I figure it's from the frame flexing.

frame flex
Frame flex from you dion? Not with those little burn outs in videos!!
