How do you tell if a rearend is a Posi?

With out taking the cover off, or running numbers, is there a way to tell if a rearend is a posi? Thanks

Ya stomp on the gas if you make 2 tracks it's posi!
If you make 1 track it is a 1 wheel peeler!
Cheers

jack the rear up, if both tires spin in the same direction when you spin them, its posi. Otherwise, one goes in one direction and the other goes in the other. Its open.

i like the tire spin technique!! two marks= posi one mark= one wheel wonder

sometimes if the rearend posi unit is worn it will only leave one mark also. Might just need clutches! Best way is to pop that cover, next best way: jack it up and turn one tire as mentioned earlier.

thanks, that is what I thought, but it has been a long time :)

idk both systems can be wrong. i have a open rearend in my truck and today i put it in neutral and revved it up and hit drive and i left 2 big black tire marks hehehehe. but most of the time its just 1. and if a posi is worn out it will only leave one mark..

And you wonder why these things happen? :p

You put it in neatral, revved it up, and dropped it in gear?

You're a damn fool. Transmissions and drivelines aren't free around here where I'm from, unless Mommy is paying for it I guess.

this transmission is already on its way out and ive been working like 30 hours a week to save up for a 700r4 and all the parts to convert over. im also saving my money for a lokar shifter for the 700r4....

i know im a damn fool for doing that but this transmission will be gone soon and the rearend sometime in the future will be swapped out for a 5 lug unit

ok? ... but why rush it?

dinnut 07-20-2004 12:42 AM

i dont do it all the time. ive only done the neutral thing like once or twice in the truck...i was just saying i did it and my rearend is open but left dual tire marks.... seems like everyone is on my back lately

If it looks like this you've got a GovLoc posi unit.
