Hood Lock Ideas?
 

I've been checking out threads on hood locks, and there are a few discussions that touch on the subject, but I'd like to hear some more ideas.

When my son heads proudly for the high school parking lot and parks his '69 next to all the new rides that some parents buy their kids these days, his will be one of the few vehicles in the lot that lets you open the hood from the outside, and therefore a target for mischevious kids or thieves.

I've got some reservations about interior cables, in terms of making it reliable and economical, but I'm open to ideas or suggestions.

I'm really curious to see if anyone has found a good way to use a good old padlock to make under-hood access more difficult, and perhaps not worth the time to defeat for a would-be troublemaker. There must be a way to do it that doesn't leave chain hanging everywhere or make you crawl under the truck to unlock it.

an eyebolt and a length of chain will make it lockable ive seen some trucks that people bolt a chain to the hood have it to where it will fall down under the core support and have an eyebolt on the bottom of the core support and put a padlock there,

You could cover the chain with a heater hose so it dont scratch up stuff.

I used one of those Kryptonite Bike cables and a pad lock.Fed it through the holes aready in my hood,down between the rad core support and the grille and round my winch at the bottom.

It's REAL cheap solution and it works GREAT. :metal:

A cautionary tale:

When I was 17 or so, my friends were all hanging out at this mall where kids would bring their hot rods to show them off. This one guy had a very nice barracuda, absolutly cherry, big hi-perf motor, and this after-market plastic hood with a big scoop over the blower, with four of those posts, one in each corner, to latch this hood down. Well this kid had these little padlocks through these posts, and sure enough, he went to start up his car and it back-fired and started something on fire and he paniced and couldn't find the keys to them locks, and we watched that 'cuda burn to the ground. Ever since then, I cringe when I hear of an actual lock that needs to be unlocked to get under the hood.

There's got to be a better way, but I don't know what it is. :confused: 'cause I need one too.

That can happen to any hood locked or not if the hood release cable got melted or hot it would acordian when you tryed to pop the hood.

You can adapt a inside hood latch off a later model truck. :burnout:

I use a 6' plastic-coated loop-ended steel cable (sold for a bicycle) wrapped around something sturdy under the hood & connected to a padlock that fits through a hole in the underside of the hood. The key stays on my keychain next to the truck key. It opens just far enough to get my fat hand under the hood to unlock it.

this is what happens when a fire burns through your hood release cable. the fire started and the alarm locked the doors on my friend. he panic and finally got the doors open and forgot to pop the hood. when fire department got there they had to pry the hood open. notice the hood prop

I use a car cover cable and lock to keep mine safe. I use the two holes in the hood and wrap it under the frame rails which is the perfect length. The lock is at the bottom and I have a key on both my key chains so I will always have a key handy. Besides, if I am going to be driving it much I take it off and put it back on if I'm going to be gone long.

I am sure there is a way to use an aftermarket electronic door lock on there with remote.
