Carb change from Q to Edelbrock
 
Hi guys and gals.
I want to replace my Q jet carb with an Edelbrock 1406 carb that I bought from the net. I'm also going to replace the stock intake with an edelbrock torker 2. My question is, where do you connect the distributor vacuum advance. The Q carb has the connection next to the choke but the edelbrock carb has none. Check the pics. Pics did not show, will have to resize.

There should be a few small vacuum ports on the front of the carb near the idle mixture screws. Check for a line that has vacuum above idle speed, that is your vacuum advance port.

One thing that might help is to hit the Edelbrock web site. They've got PDF versions of the 1406 installation manual and the 1406 rebuild manual. They helped me a bunch when I rebuilt my 1406 and installed it a few weeks ago. Good luck with that carb!

If you engine is stock, I would use a different intake manifold. The torker 2 is a single plane, not real great for a stock engine. If you have an engine that needs it though, then hey, sounds good to me. :)

Thank you all. I do have a stock engine and according to the Edelbrock web site the torker 2 intake is for high-performance. Well, I haven't taken the stock intake off the engine. I will just replace the carbs.

A stock motor would still gain in horsepower and torque with single plane. It is meant
for wide open throttle gain.Still the weight reduction alone would prompt me to change
from the stock cast iron. This intake for sure is what racers want. A dual plane would be better in your case. Good luck however you proceed.

I think the point that some folks are trying to make is that you'll need to get either an adapter or a new intake when performing the swap. The Q-Jet is spread bore whereas the Edelbrock is square bore. Adapters will work or you can do what many folks do (including myself) and replace the intake while you're at it.

The edelbrock has two sets of holes so you can install it on either a Holley style intake or a Q jet intake. The Torquer intake is not that great, the Victor Jr. is actually better since you get a lot of top end but dont lose much bottom end, the standard ports arent that big so it doesnt lose very much velocity. It can be ported quite a bit to use better heads and cams though. The Performer RPM and RPM Air Gap would be the best compromise though. I am using a RPM with a 600 cfm Carter and a 1105 Summit cam kit on my 350 that is otherwise stock except for roller rockers and stud girdles. It works well even if its in a 3/4 ton truck with a three on the tree.

It never even dawned on me that's what those holes were for. I always just assumed you had to run an adapter. Huh, I guess you really can learn something new every day.

I just used the Performer intake, with my 1405. Later, changed to the Edelbrock Q-Jet. No complaints.
