69 Chevy Rare?
 

Just got my 1969 4x4 Chevy its all original and in need of restoration. It has the original 350 with a 3 speed "married unit" on the column. Haven't seen any around, or heard anyone else mention the 3 speed married unit for a '69 4x4. Any info would be appreciated.

My uncle has a 69 GMC 2wd 3speed, but I have never seen one on a 4x4 either.

I have a '69 4x4 with the "3 on the tree" also I love it sound mean as ever with pipes when your getting to highway speed cause of the rpms. But then again it also eats gas up nicely. How about some pics!

Welcome to the board I have never seen a 3 on the tree k-model truck or blazer..

My 71 plow truck came with three on the tree but I changed to an automatic as shifting and plowing with the stick was not fun. The three speed was standard on the 4x4's, the other transmissions were optional.

I believe Yukon Jacks 69 had a 307 w/ 3 on the tree. Of course it's got a 454 now. Welcome to the board!

I've said it before on this board. The best thing I ever did to my 4x4 is take the 3-speed manual out and replace it with a th350. It is a really pretty easy swap if you can deal with the weight of the items involved.

Yep, mine had the 3 speed manual - wonderful paper weight, unless your column linkage isn't binding, then it isn't half bad.

The tranny is a SM318 Gear Ratios (Heavy Duty 3-Speed Fully Synchronized)

1st 3.03, 2nd 1.75, 3rd 1.00, Reverse 3.02

Your transfer case should be a Rockwell T221 with a 1.91:1 low range - good transfer case but just a little parts availablility issue and the ones you do find are expensive.

Hey Yukon Jack do you know how to keep the linkage from binding? mine binds when I am coming from 2nd back into first, everywhere else it works great. Anyhelp would be much appreciated

When I had my three speed I also had problems and some adjustment on the linkage got it shifting again.

To adjust the three speed you will need some sort of alignment rod, I used a nail cut to the right length. I also used a long board to keep the clutch pedal pressed in while doing the adjustments. The linkage adjustment is made under the hood on the steering column shaft. What you want to do is loosen up the nuts that tighten the guides on the shifting linkage. Get the tranny into neutral, which will have the two guides in line with each other. The guides have a small hole in them and there
is also a raised notch on top of the steering column. Lay the nail on the notch and then move the guides until the nail slides through each guide. Then what I did was moved the linkage rods up and down to see how they cycle through the gears and then get back into neutral. Then I tightened the nuts so the guide is secure. Remove the alignment rod, ie the nail, and then cycle the tranny with the shift column in the cab. I had to do a little fine tuning to get the linkage right but it took all of 10 minutes once I figured out what I was doing.
