89 suburban tranny trouble
Well i read all the feedback on the 88 i am having a different problem i have reverse, no od it is a 700r4 do u think its fried or should i try these other things first and if it is no good could it interchange with a 350 turbo or a 400? I have only had it about 10 months and it doesnt want 2 tow anything its geared really high to save gas?? dunno really :confused: This is my toy he has a 72 jimmy i love this forum it has helped with both toys :bowtie: Thanks for your time!!!!!!!!!!!!

Problems like this are comon to all trucks. You would probably get faster replies in the regular 73-87 Forum.
Yes it sounds like it's toast and needs a rebuild. Gear ratio will put a lot of load on the transmssion. What size tires are on it and do you know the gear ratio? Most will tell you that if you have 33 inch tires and a 700R4 you need to be geared atleast 4.10 and might be better with 4.56 if you tow. TH350 and TH400 will bolt in but you need to also get a Driveshaft that matches. The transmissions are different lengths so it has to be accounted for. |
I just had to replace the trans (700r4) in my 89 for symptoms much like yours. The internal bearing in the planetary came apart and spit metal all throughout the works. No easy fix for your kind of problem.

Buy a new TCI or Hughes 700R4 with all the good internals for around $1500 & all your troubles will be over.....
