I have been pretty bad about posting pics, and when I did there were more of my daughter than of the truck. Truck is in paint shop now and this is how she sits. If you spot something dirty or not blasted and painted..... Believe me, I know. Workin fast is the problem. This truck is my daily driver and I have been BORROWING a car while I do this. ....It's been almost 3 months.
Enjoy.

Look's pretty damn good ....

stickshift_or_walk 10-01-2004 09:16 AM

Lookin' good, CW...some questions.

Same serpentine setup as mine. Did you use the high-angle water neck from the donor? What app was that radiator hose from?

Also, where'd you get the cover for the compressor?

Thanks...SSOW :bowtie:

Peregrine 10-01-2004 09:24 AM

It looks great. I couldn't live with white fenderwells though, you're a brave soul......

Brainchild 10-01-2004 09:49 AM

Looks good.Working on them and driving them is a hard thing to do.I am in the same situation. It sucks, but whatcha gonna do right:D

chickenwing 10-01-2004 10:49 AM

SSOW: Thanks, No. thermostat housing is stock application from napa. Upper hose is stock for 72 chevy truck from Kragens. Need to put an abrasion pad on it. It does rub the alternator. I bought the compressor from ebay. It does look kinda cool. Dunno for sure what the app is. I will check out the neighbors shop truck for you. Almost could swear he has the cover. 91 3/4 ton.
Peregrine: I've been gettin that a lot. I've owned a lot of white vehicles. I don't remember washing them nearly as much as the dark blue tahoe my wife has now. Anyway, if it does prove a pain in the a$$, it will be easy enough to drop em and re-spray em.

When I saw it, it was in the garage, looks like it has "seen the light" so to speak. Might be able to come take peek this Saturday afternoon with my rugrat after soccer, I'll let you know. Great progress!

dallas71 10-01-2004 04:25 PM

what serpentine setup did you use on this motor??? Is this from a late model???

chickenwing 10-02-2004 01:04 AM

Jeff, truck is in paint shop. Won't have it back for a couple of weeks. Sorry to say this, but looks like family weekend for me this time.

Dallas 71: My setup is from an early 90's 3/4 ton. Water pump is reverse rotation so keep that in mind. The brackets are cast aluminum.. They can be found in the GM Performance parts catalog for quite a penny. Drawback on em is I heard they tend to crack. Although, mine have not after a year on my truck and a decade or so on someone elses. Also, the passenger side bracket has a hole that is non-existent on pre-vortec heads. I match marked the center thinking to drill and tap it....but the center was quite a bit off the boss and I chickened out. Emailed GM performance parts and they were quite insistent that it was ok to run with only 2 bolts on that bracket... The jury is still out. There evidently is some steel serpentine brackets out there. I do not know year/model though. Saw em on a 55 a couple years back but was uninterested back then so questions were not asked. Hope this helps.

Take a look on an 89 Chev halfton, they've got an all steel serp bracket setup

TugOwar 10-02-2004 07:46 AM

I'm lovin it so far CW. Engine bay is clean and functional, cept for the garden hose colored heater hose. hehe ;)

I think the white wells look cool and will help brighten things up when working under the hood, changing spark plugs comes to mind, it's usually dark down in there behind headers and such.

I gotta ask about the plug wires. Those are so clean and neat, out of the way. Mine are a big loose mess. Where would a guy order a setup like yours?

Keep up the good work,
Tug

1972C10 10-02-2004 11:03 AM

Yeah 89 I know have the steel brackets :bowtie:

chickenwing 10-02-2004 01:08 PM

Tug: The garden hose is admittedly ugly. It is a silicone hose though and should last long long time. I spent a lot of time wiring this truck to hide as much of the harness as I could. All of the aux battery and fan control wiring was ran below the upper radiator support. The fuel pump and ignition relays are hid behind the aux batt. On the driver fender, I had to leave the fuse block out for access. I left the aux batt relay out for roadside trouble-shooting purposes. It powers 2 relays through a (cough) ford crash switch. Then there is a bump switch I put in. On the passenger fender are 2 maxi-fuses, 1 for main harness protection other for fans also 1 junction with fusible link for aux batt..
I will try to post some closer shots of my motor. I really like how the temp sending, choke and compressor wires came out. I ran em through high heat spark plug wire looms from napa and secured them to the valve covers with regular loom clips. The plug wire holders are pretty standard stuff. I did find some good lookin high heat boots to slip on the ends. The wires themselves are just some cheaper accel wires that I cut to fit. Buy em at Kragens. Guess you never made your own wires before. Pay attention to the instructions. There are some fancy smancy tools to make this easy. I found a cheap aluminum crimp die. It even has a razor slot so you dont nick the core when you strip off the insulation. The last neat thing was the starter harnness I got from Summit. It comes with a weatherpak connector so you can disconnect it for easy starter removal. Thanks for the props on the fender wells. I've ran across a lot of critics. If it doesn't work out I'll change the color.

Stickshift: I checked out the 91 3/4 ton next door and it does not have the cover. Sorry, no leads. The picture has allready rolled off ebay and I do not remember the user name of who I bought it from. Anyone else ever saw a chrome R-4 compressor cover?

stickshift_or_walk 10-12-2004 12:48 PM

Hey CW -

New question. I see you've run your heater hoses from the manifold to the core and then back to the radiator. I assume you've done this because the later reverse-rotation water pump has no outlet for the heater.

I've got that problem, so what radiator application did you use? You've got it covered up well, but it looks like it may be a 4-core? None of the one's I've ordered so far have the heater outlets.

Thanks....SSOW :bowtie:

chickenwing 10-12-2004 01:54 PM

SSOW: Yes it is a 4 row. Pretty sure that was the original set-up. Anyway, It is a new stock aftermarket radiator since I drilled a nice 1/4" hole through the core fabbing up the fan mounts. You would think I had heard of a drill stop. The radiator shop I bought it from just brazed in the fitting. Sorry, don't want to remember the price!
