How much?
Hey Guys!
I've got a tough decision to make... I found a local 4x4 shortbed 3/4 ton truck for sale, and could get it for about 2000 dollars. Its got a recently rebuilt 454, all 1 ton running gear (D60 front, 14 bolt FF rear, 4.10 ratio, CM465 tranny), and a surprisingly solid body on it. What I am thinking I could do is buy this truck trade the equipment that I like from my truck over (power windows, power locks, Blazer tank, driver's side battery, TPI 350) And put the 4x4's stuff into my GMC, then sell it. How much do you guys figure I would be able to get for my truck? Other than just recently, it has been a trusty, dependable truck, but it is just too rough for me to repair with my current income. I'd hate to see it go, but I'd love my 4x4, and I'd still have plenty of my GMC in it, I'd paint it blue and white too. I'd just much rather put my money and time into the engine and drivetrain than into body work... If I can get at least 1200 for my truck, I think I'll go ahead and buy this truck from the fella. Only thing thats bad as far as the body goes is some surface rust in the floor pans, and a nasty paintjob on the bed (no rust coming through it less a couple spots at the back of the arch, the bed itself looks good) The interior is rough on it too, but my GMC's interior is nearly mint less the door panels and dash bad. |
why take the 454 out of the 4x4? Why not just finish your truck, sell it, and use that money to help pay for the 4x4 or maybe put it towards the 4x4.

There only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. Personnaly I dont care for the 3/4 ton or 1 ton trucks. Thats just me.

if i had that situation, screw putting TPI on the 350, sell all of the tpi stuff and use that money to build a kickin' 454, but thats just me

I was in the same boat about two months ago...
The '78 3/4 ton I had was a bondo trap. I didn't know this when I bought it. Got it home and over the course of about 9 months I found that most of the truck was held together by bondo. Since I live in arizona, you don't have to worry about rust, but come to find out,it was a michigan truck. Bought the truck for $1100. The dude told me the 700R4 and 350 (4 bolt main) were rebuilt recently, but had no records on it, but everything was spotless. And he got behind on his bills. So 9 months later I was tired of the bondo and endless bodywork and came to a conclusion... I took the engine and tranny out of the truck, looked them over inside and out and to my suprise the dude wasn't lying...all the stuff was new or close to it! It was actually a 4 bolt block with a pretty hefty cam bored 30 over. mated to a built 700R4 with all the B&M goodies. I wanted a car, I was tired of riding around in my friend's small rice burners when we'd go somewhere as a group any larger than 3 people. Hmmmmmm... I bought a mint condition '88 chevy caprice classic with 103K on the clock, and put the truck engine and tranny in it. Turned around and sold the truck to some farmer that had a drivetrain for it. Man does the ole' caprice fly, and I have a spare 305 and 700R4 with only 103K on them. So what I'm saying is, yes...buy the other truck, swap all your crap over and sell the old truck. Personally I don't like body work, it seems like a pandoras box, I think you understand where I'm comming from. Have fun dude! |
I didn't think GM built 3/4-ton 4x4 shortbeds? I've always thought all 3/4 tons were longbeds. I could be wrong...
|
Well, the more I think about it, the more I just wanna stick with my GMC, I've got a crapload of work into it already, and if all it takes later on is a new body, it'll cost about as much for the new body as I'd pay for this other truck.
BTW -- The reason why I'd get rid of the 454 would be gas being too expensive. |
no replacement for displacement
finish your truck then sell it
a dana 60 front end is worth 1000 here in us dollars so if the truck is 2000 and in good shape with a big block i'd check the frame for cracks. look by the steering bod and in the rear where the front of the rear spring hooks to the frame. sounds like a killer deal but its almost to good to be true. check it out real good befor you invest any money ""1987SierraClassic I didn't think GM built 3/4-ton 4x4 shortbeds? I've always thought all 3/4 tons were longbeds. I could be wrong... "" if its a 3/4 ton shortbed it used to be a half ton and had an axle swap. |
Good choice I think you have turned that truck around since you've owned it as I can see from your website.

The truck runs great, and has a good body, but I dunno, I am just so attached to my ol' GMC, and I don't really need a big mudder truck anyways. Me, I like your 3/4 ton. Character. I'd keep on what your doing. You'll have a good and little different truck than the 4x4.

my warmed over 460 gets 12mpg in town, all u need to do to big blocks is throw headers on 'em and a good intake, and up the cam a little bit, thoes big blocks get great millage, that is if u drive the same and keep our foot about of it, and if shipping cost weren't so much, id take that 454 from you
