:banghead: the peice is giving me trouble its bolted right to the block no shims and the darn :banghead: :banghead: thing spins free. the truck burnt up 5 years ago wiring mostly and my dad being a farmer didnt have enough time to finish it. its an 84 350 dont know if its the original. my dad told me that when he bought it they told him the trans was rebuilt. could it have the wrong fliwheel in it? could the tranny be a 700r4? any help would be very appreciated. :bowtie:

since nobody has responded ill give ya a hand lol , theres a few different things you need to look at , first get under it and check out your flywheel , if it looks like it is ground pretty good it might not be catching all the way , the first thing i would do is !! get underneath your truck and look at the starter , there should be 2 posts on the solenoid that have wires going to them , one is the big center post with the battery cable on it and the other is the little s polst , with a little wire on it , now with your key off , preferably out of the truck , take a long screwdriver and lay it across those to posts , it is gonna spark alot when you do it lol , but you will be able to see what the problem is , the starter may be wore out and is not engaging all the way , if you have any questions about this matter feel free to call me at 217-567-3665 , ask for mac and ill be able to tell ya a little better , i have actually twisted the rod in the starter that the gear rides on in half , ,, if you try what i described make sure your truck is in park or neutral

or you could just have someone bump the startor for you...

ive done that the starter seems to be hanging down to far. Ill see how far it wants to engage.

well atleast you don't have to start your truck like that, my friend has to start his car like that, poor kid is to poor to fix it

Try to turn the motor a little with a wrench or socket on the front, 1/4 or 1/2 turn or so then try to start it. I have seen a tooth or two get broken of the flywheel and the starter could not engage.

is the fly wheel on backwards?

good question it could possibly be on backwards it was replaced years ago it shucked some teeth out how could i tell?

Didn't TIMSPEED have a similar problem about 6 months ago? I am thinking he changed his starter out and found that there are different types. You might PM him and ask.

could be a bad starter housing, i ran into this on a friends 92 yukon, got a "new" starter from advanced auto and it just didint seem to line up right with the flywheel no matter wht shims were in it, ended up goin back to get another starter out htem side by side and you could see the one was about 1/8" different from the other, put the different one on and had no problems
