Progress pics!!! One big hurdle leaped!

Got the frame shortned last night. Finished stripping everything off of it tonight, just finished a few minutes ago. I just need to finish grinding the welds, then weld in the fish plates on the inside of the rails, then it's off to the sand blasters on Monday. Gonna give it a good hot pressure wash before I take it to him. Want to keep him on my good side

When it comes back, I'll do the C-notch, box-in a few places, and then start prepping for the finish (still undetermined).

Once the frame is done, I need to finish the cab. Then I can fit all the new body parts, test-assemble the truck, then tear down and let the fun begin!!!

Enjoy! :burnout:

sweet line cuts

That is a sweet way to cut down the frame do you use a template or is that all from freehand .

I used a piece of 1/8" flat bar clamped to the frame as a guide for the straight lines. I cut the corners free hand. I drew the cuts out on the frame after measuring. For the radiused corners, I used one of those plastic circle guides. I am kind of anal about using square corners in something like this, it's a good place for a crack to form.

I am sure it is total overkill on my part, but like I said, I am anal about this stuff :D

That's probably the best job I've ever seen of shortening a frame.

I assume you used that big Miller mig welder in the corner?

no one ever said that being anal was a bad thing. what ever gave you the idea to cut the frame that way? i have only seen them with just a vertical cut and a diagonal cut. your way looks more supportive.

I got the stepped cut idea from ebfabman. But, being the anal kind, I decided to do the radiused corners instead of 90* corners.

Tx Firefighter - Wow, thanks!! Yup, I used the Millermatic 210. Only way to go!!

sorry to be off topic, but what did you use to dress the welds so nicely? it's perfectly smooth..

Brainchild 10-13-2004 01:14 AM

Great job.I like the way you did a horizontal line, much more support than I've seen done.

Excellent

kingsolver72 10-13-2004 01:40 AM

Definitely impressive.I did think of ebfaman when I seen your project...But my hat is off to you Glock, you have some Major Rager skills.

How did you make the cuts in the frame Plasma cutter? What make and model?

No problem, I used a regular grinding disc to knock down the weld, the used a 60 grit flap disc to dress them. I love those flap discs!

Yes, it is a Thermal Dynamics Econo Pac 50. 220v, 50a. Bought it basically like new, never used for $800!! The guy I bought it from never used it because it had a 220 plug that is similar to a 110 plug, only the two flat terminals are horizontal instead of vertical. He could never plug it in, so he never used it, and bought a torch set. Never said that guy was bright!!

Second one from the right:

Bring it on up!!!

BTW - Don't forget to bring plenty of Coors Light longnecks!!

dubie 10-13-2004 09:28 AM

Are you going to fish plate it for additional strength? I am going to do the same thing to my spare 72 lwb frame.

TugOwar 10-13-2004 09:28 AM

Man that is one beautiful cut! Plasma cutters are the real deal.

Yukon Jack 10-13-2004 09:40 AM

Like said above, very nice job!

silvertonguedevil 10-13-2004 09:50 AM

If you can pull off that kind of work with your frame, I can't wait to see the whole truck done! Keep us posted with progress pics!! You ROCK! :metal:
