67-72 rat rods?
 

Is there anybody out there doing these trucks with old style whitewall tires? I am just curious on what it might look like! You know like flatt black, baby moons, smoothies,dirty yellows with pinstriping and such! Or are these trucks to new and square for this style? Got pics? thank you in advance!

with all the attention the style you describe is getting lately,i'm sure you will be seeing more flat black.guys with less $ can put more into the chasis and drive train and still run a look that is curent and growing in popularity.

I wouldn't call my rat rod but I did it in the ol skool traditional looks

the goal with my truck is rat rod. but that probably wont go down till after i graduate.

I have got the same shifter dubie! came with my 72! I would love to do mine in flat black but i do not think the long bed looks good that way! I know i will shorten at least one of my frames. I am not going to do it until i get a shortbox to put on at the same time.

a few years ago I bought a new set of tires & chrome smoothies with baby moons. I had the tires white wall out. :barf: I quickly changed it to blackwall. :cool:

i got a longbed in flat black..... well epoxy primer..... i love it!!! mine also has the torque thrust D's on it and somewhat of a rake..... sorry I dont know how to load pictures on......

where is the last post? whoever posted it and then deleted it, you should have left it up. It made a valid point on the rat rod history and style. Like I said above, I don't consider mine a rat rod, but definately ol skool. If you're reading this, please insert your reply again, it was a good one

I think that flat black can be pulled off on many of these trucks as well as some cool pin striping, but as far as wide white walls (the big 4in style), that's just plain a sin. I think it would not only look like a turd, but they’re from a different era than these trucks represent. Also the "rat-rod" craze is just a fad and lets hope it falls out of fashion soon.

I deleted it because I didn't want to start anything like a huge debate about what is a rat rod and what is not...but here is the jist of it again.........

Technically your 67-72 truck is too "new" to be classified as a "rat rod" or as many people who actually build these cars like to call them "HotRods" cause that is what they are.
Flat Black Primer and wide whites aren't going to make your truck a "ratrod" or even a "hotrod" cause in my book - a hot rod should be before 1952 or so - then they started with the "custom" look.

Anyway a True "RatRod" or HotRod as I prefer to call them is called that because it is built with whatever parts are available at the time (Not being able to call up Speedway motors or Brookville Roadster (that would be "GMC Paul's or Christian's Classics for our trucks) or Summit Racing for the latest in "go - fast - goodies". most hotrods/ratrods were built in the mid to late 50s and early 60's. most of them had Chysler 331/354/392 Hemi's or Buick Nailheads, big Caddy motors mabey they were lucky and got an early 265 or 327 or 283 that they got straight from the junk yard...as well as the rest of the car - i.e. rear end etc. Whatever they had or could use...they would use - and most of all they would have fun with it...not trailer it around or be afraid to drive it....
the whole point of owning an old truck/car is to drive it isn't it? or did i miss something there?

You can still do the truck in "ol skool" traditional style - with the wide whites/smoothies/flat black etc. but remember that your truck is 67-72

I'm building a '33 Ford pickup...which i would like to think is a "ratrod" or "traditional hotrod". It has a 4" dropped straight axle, a ford 9" rear end, Zed Chassis, 3" Chopped Roof, 3 Rochester Duece Carbs. But when they built traditional rods..there were no BigBlockChevy's lying around..so that kinda puts mine out of the category depending on how strict you are.

i don't want to start a huge debate or anything, but the owner of the thread did ask if his truck was too new and "boxy" to be a rat rod.

Your truck will look great in traditional wear....just may not fit the category correctly...but remember HAVE FUN and DRIVE IT

Rat rods are generally built on a tight budget. That little red Model A coupe is a high-dollar car bud. :D

but it has a taste of the traditional style

Love that Caddy Motor Longhorn...looks good in there...how did it fit...much swearing during installation? - which most of us do with an easy small block/small block swap

It took a little "shave" on the firewall, to set that caddy back as far as i wanted.....not too much swearing, but i do remember a couple "threads" being installed in a bloody knuckle during that installation! that Caddy did fit nice, & probaly would have stayed......till I started pricing a hopped up 514 incher(BIG OUCH) on the wallet! SB Chevs are cheaper to build, & you can beat the toad snot out of them .......they just come back for more ;) crazyL
