tranny question
 

I have a 70 chevy with a saginaw three speed. There is 3-73 gears in the rear. I heard about a 200R4 install. Is this a good idea? I am running 2900RPM at 60 MPH. I want to get the RPM's down. I have a limited budget and any help is appreciated. As soon as I figure it out I will post pics of my 1 month old, old skool truck.

I think the 200r4 is the cheapest, easiest way to go.But it may not hold up to the hp of your engine. Lotsa guys here will know more than me...could also search the board, you will find lots of threads on this topic.

I don't think it's the cheapest route, but definitely one of the best. The 200r4 from a Grand National would the best to get. In stock form it will handle your motor just fine and when built right it will handle alot more than you could throw at it. The cheapest route would be to switch to a taller gear (lower numerically).

Ok, I was thinkin tranny/od swap, the taller gear is definately cheaper

Taller tires are the cheapest of all. A set of 31 inch tall tires would effectively "kill" the gear some.

It's not cheap, but its worth it. My 67 has a 700R4. Runs 23-2400rpm @ 75-80mph with a 3.73 rear and 15mpg. I got a free tranny from my dads old 83 firebird and automatic crossmember from a junkyard, $35, you will also need a tv cable kit from Bowtie Overdrives, $130, a tranny cooling kit, about $50, a converter lock up kit, $75, I had to shorten my driveshaft, $15, and one case of beer, $18. Unfortunately my tranny blew after 6,000 miles. Most likely due to not purchasing Bowtie Overdrives TV cable kit. I am now looking at a local rebuild shop...$900 for tranny, and I WILL be getting the BTO kit.
