Dying Sun Visors?
 

Is it possible with a vinyl dye to change my sun visors from off white to black in my 72? They are in nice shape, but the rest of my interior is junk and I'm changing the color from white to black, so if I can save money anywhere, I will.

Yes you can...Go to NAPA and look for Black vinyl spray paint...did mine and it came out great.

I have used dye before, and it worked Ok I guess. Got it from a local restoration shop years ago. Before buying the dye, I would quickly check to see if anyone on the board has some good used ones for sale. Not that dying is a bad idea, but used visors are usually very cheap. I bought a set off here and they were in good shape.

I've seen some of this new dye work wonders on vinyl, so I'll likely try it. I never use the things really anyways, but even up there they'll still look bad in white.

Ya, I agree they should be done. Maybe post a pic when the dye is done to show the board how the new stuff works??

I've redone 2 sets in black...the first ones lasted 4 years in one truck and still looked great, the second set are in the longhorn and have 2 years and no miles on them...so they look like I just did them yesterday.

Make sure to buy some pre paint prep. Scrub the crap out of them with the soap and water then spray on the prep stuff. Otherwise, you are almost certian to get fish eye in the dye.

I'm not recomending it. But I did the whole interior of a chevelle once with spray paint. It coverd really nice. but on real hot summer days it was a little tacky for a while.. like I said, i'm not recomending it. But it does work.

Hey, He's not talking about spraying the whole interior and either am I, as I would not do that nor would I spray a seat that is sat on....but Visors????. But I had a perfect set of Green visors that I wanted Black...9 bucks and about ten min and they looked great. If the sun tears them up in a few years...I'll just hit em' again with the dye....Go get your Vinyl Spray, and give it a shot.

Just make sure you let them sit and dry a few days. I also cleaned mine with water and soap first, and then used a good solvent to clean them. Looks good now.

Don't buy any brand but SEM--available on line if you can't find it locally and FOLLOW DIRECTIONS if you want it to last. Many people don't properly clean or use the preparation recommended.

SEM is the brand I was planning on using. They make great products that seem to last. I rarely drive at times when the sun is in my eyes, so it's not like they'll be high use. And as for drying time, I'll give them about 6 months or so, as they'll be one of the first steps in the restoration. Thanks!

I have done the headliner, dash pad, visors, door panels & arm rests... and the only pieces I do NOT recomend doing it to are the door panels and arm rests.
All the others still look awsome. Ask CHEVYE...I'll bet he didn't even realize the visors and dash pad used to be white. ;)
