4wd front rebuild kits

who sells a good front end kit for 4wd's. i want to replace everything, all tierods, all ball joints, pitman arm, ect.

i was looking at the ones at www.performancesuspension.com they have a kit for 73-80 with everything for $360 but their kit for 81-87 is $280, what is the difference in the 4wd front ends between the 73-80 and 81-87's?

thanks

I can't answer your question, but I can say that I was happy with the service they provided when I ordered my drop spindles and springs.

dana 44 and 10 bolt I guess.

73-80 should be a Dana 44, 81-87 is a 10 bolt. Both rears are close but slight differences...

i'm pretty sure the front is a 10 bolt. why would having a d44 make the front end kit $80 more?

1972 01-04-2005 06:27 PM

The only price difference I could think of would be for pre-76 dana 44's with the flat top passenger side knuckle, because the tie rod end (the long one) is about $90 more than one for a 76+ D44 and the 10 bolt. 10 bolts were used in '79, so I don't know what the 80/81 split price difference could be for.

That is one thing I still have to do is rebuild my dana 44...Later Mike

I rebuilt mine. I also put in new u-joints, bearings, races, and seals. I bought all of my parts locally, some from the 4x4 shop and some from Napa and AutoZone.

I got most of my stuff from Parts Mike. Good prices on genuine McQuarry-Norris (Dana Spicer) stuff. I bought new brake rotors and axle shafts from Coleman's Surplus (www.colemans.com). The brake rotors were OEM with the wheel bearings for $50 and the axleshafts were new OEM for $40 each.

Parts Mike is also very knowledgable and more than willing to share it even if you don't buy anything!

talk to Tim, i'm pretty sure he's done one of his at one time or another. he can get ya the hookup on ANYTHING you need for your truck too.

I completely went through the 10 bolt on the front of my 84. I used all McQuay norris or Sealed power parts that I bought locally. I haven't seen a rebuild kit for a 4x4 front end.

I replaced all 4 ball joints, both drag link ends and adjusting sleeve, both tie rod ends and center bar, wheel bearings, front axle u-joints, calipers, brake pads, and rotors and the sway bar bushings.

Make sure etc. includes the U-joints. Prepare your wallet for the possibility that the selector hubs may be shot - that adds a pretty penny.

Shot front-wheel U-joints can cause problems that feel like screwed up tie-rod-ends, but persist when you've replaced all the tie rod ends.

I am not sure about anyone else, but I always use Spicer greasable u-joints in my axle shafts. The axle shaft joints are the smallest u-joints on the truck and usually the most stressed.
