Don't try this at home, kids!

I'm sad to report that another one bites the dust. After a minor repair and weeks of no troubles, the brakes on my 68 completely failed as I was taking a turn off of highway 100 in Minneapolis. I tried to control the truck as best I could, but the end result was a near parallel smack into the concrete barrier at about 40. I spent a few hours in the ER, got 11 stitches on top of my head, a nice shiner on my right eye and a number of other cuts and bruises.

I'm about as good as can be expected, though. See?

(what you don't see are the cuts on the bridge of my nose, a nice, black right eye and so forth -- you can see the dried blood on my shirt, though!)

I do have one favor to ask anyone that's willing to help a guy out. See, my truck is at a tow lot in Minneapolis. I'm sure the bill is going to be very high so the sooner I can get what's left out of there, the better off I'll be. If there's anyone in the area that's got access to a trailer and maybe a place to put the old girl up until my old man and I can make arrangements to pick it up, I would be VERY grateful. Just let me know how I can make it worth your while.

Remember, check those brakes carefully and PUT IN SHOULDER BELTS if you haven't done so already! Oh, and hug your local EMT and police officer. They were both on-site in a matter of just a couple of minutes. They were very courteous, helpful and really wonderful folks.

Ouch! Glad to hear you weren't SERIOUSLY injured (not like your pain isn't real though). That's too bad about the truck. If I were in the area, I'd hook you up. But, we are in Alaska still...

Good luck!

krue 03-07-2005 02:41 AM

Glad you didn't get hurt any worse than you did. Hopefully someone up there can give you a hand.

DUUUUDE!!!??? that sucks big time! I would help if Lefty wasnt out of commission. do you have a # for TKeduK8R?
try putting a thread in General Discussion, Im sure one of the guys close can help.
did you scramble the noodle? keep a look out for any signs of hidden injury.
should I make you a wig from barber shop remnants? JK
maybe we should have the spring meet at your place to get the truck back on the road & stopping good.

That picture freaks me out. Those 2 lines look like part of a window in front of you, but then the horizontal one appears to disappear behind the door which is behind you.

Canadian694x4 03-07-2005 09:45 PM

Sorry to hear about the Truck...Good to see you made it out of the wreak.

68C15 03-07-2005 11:40 PM

so just how bad is it? is she driveable? Shawn & I are thinking of making a trip up your way in a couple of weeks. let us know if there is anything we can do.

71swb4x4 03-07-2005 11:47 PM

I am game. We can pull out your stiches, powder up that eye, and then turn our attention to the truck. ;)

68C15 03-07-2005 11:53 PM

and if you are still bleeding after Shawn pulls the stitches I can sew you back up again. all I have to do is find some twine & a curved screwdriver.
for those of you that dont know Shuttermutt is a VERY safe driver. ( I followed him for a while last year & was ready to push him.)

mr402 03-08-2005 01:45 AM

Shuttermutt, I'm real sorry to hear you were injured when the brakes went out. I hope you heal very quickly. If you ever determine what caused the brakes to fail please post it on the board so we can all run out and check our trucks as well. One more vote for shoulder harnesses and head restraints.

shuttermutt 03-08-2005 04:52 PM

Thanks for all the kind words of support! I'm not as stiff and sore as I probably should be, but I'm certainly feeling it. The swelling is going down which helps, but I'm still not straying far from the couch.

I might have someone lined up to store the truck for a couple of weeks until Bumpster and I can make arrangements to get to moved down South. The wrecker company charges $25 per day to store vehicles. YOWZA! If anybody had a car trailer and a big heart, I'd sure like to talk to 'em!

da-burb 03-09-2005 12:52 AM

I'd have plenty of space for your truck at my place. I have the trailer with a winch too, but no tow vehicle until I get my oil pan replaced. Where is the truck located and what hours can it be picked up?

da-burb 03-09-2005 12:53 AM

BTW...you look like an alien!

71Chevy4-speed 03-09-2005 01:59 AM

That really sucks man, glad to hear your ok. Hope somebody can help ya out. Hows the truck?>
