It Really Runs!!

My ASE mechanic which just so happens to be my Step-Dad, came over and

ok. I FINALLY get the new engine to start and run and my ASE mechanic which just so happens to be my step dad came over and helped it to purr like a kitten!! the problem was all of the valves were too tight. I haven't a probelm one. and i can now go out there and turn the key over with out any choke and it will fire right up. PTL \o/!
anyways:
I get ready to put the drive shaft in and look at the splines on the front yolk and the look really fine and the output shaft on the tranny looks coarse. So ok I put the drive shaft through the hole and line the carrier up and the yolk is a good 3 inches from the output shaft of the tranny.
See this thread: ( linky of shaft needed) to help me out
I've got a 350 in the V8 position with a stock 3 speed with a short tail which came from a 67 pickup with an I6 in it. what are the measurements of the new drive shaft i need? thanks guys.

hey! Check out these other posts to get a little cought up on the running process of the new motor.

oh yes. it is really nice. i've had this truck and motor for a year now and started putting it all together back in early october and it's nice to have that major step out of the way. now just to find a drive shaft!

RShaips 03-14-2005 11:49 PM

Measure the distance and get one made, I just had one made for $200.00 although I had the yoke.Good luck

whitesswj 03-15-2005 12:00 AM

where can you go and have one made. thanks sswj

RShaips 03-15-2005 12:09 AM

I just called a driveshaft shop in St. Louis called Driveshafts unlimited. If you can't find one call a transmission shop I bet they can tell you where to go.

Just measured mine. The front shaft is 37 inches between centers of u joints. V8 with turbo 350 should be same length and yoke. Should be able to find one in junk yard. Back half should be the same. I am assuming saginaw 3 speed which is 21.5 inches long from rear seal to bellhousing.

hmmmm... i'm not sure what kind of tranny i have. i'll go check before the sun goes down and get the numbers off of it.

thanks. sswj

whitesswj 03-15-2005 07:00 PM

here's the numbers that is on the transmission itself:

3743368
A143

there were some numbers on the tail shaft but i couldn't make them out.

what transmission is it?

Does it look like this ?, How long is it ??

special70gmc 03-15-2005 09:25 PM

did u end up painting the engine or its it a big v shaped orange rust ball now? just curious cuz that motor would look 90 time better if you spent a couple dollers on 2 cans of chevy orange paint!!! -kyle, im not bashing just askin

whitesswj 03-17-2005 02:10 AM

yep, that's what it looks like except blue and with a orange bell housing.

and No i didn't paint any of the motor. most of it was already painted a dark silver color when i got it the only part that is rusty is the water pump. I'm not really into the chevy orange color myself. i'd rather have a metal color or some wild color like neon green or some thing of the like except pink. No bashin taken. oh or chrome chrome is nice on a motor!!

ps.....i haven't started since monday and i went out today and pulled the choke, tapped the pedal and it fired right up!!!! My step dad did a real good job with the tuning of the carb and timing. He put it a 4 degrees advance. it is really smooth with a good firm fire!!

UPDATE: It will drive tommorrow!

Alright here's what I had to do:

I had to take the drive shaft to a shop in Memphis called "Truck Parts Specailists" and have it lengthened about 5"

They had a yolk for me and they installed my ujoints and carrier. They had to order the tubing. To lengthen the front shaft, install parts, and balance it was supposed to be 210.

I call then next day about noon and ask about a progress report:
Dude says, i just got the tubing in and we found a dent in the rear one and it won't balance out quite right. I can retube the rear and balance and parts for 250 cash and i'll bring it to you. I think cool but why bring it to me??

I call Today and he says yea its almost ready and i get off at 5 and i'll bring it to you then. I say i get off at 3 and i'll come get it, he says nah that's ok i don't mind bringing it to you. I think: I smell a rat! something's not right. I'm not being ripped off but something's still not right here. Call step dad, and tell boss and thier brows raise up too.

I show up at the shop at 3 and ask for my shaft. The boss man doesn't have the paper work and doesn't know where it's at. asks dude what's up and he comes out alone and tells me it'll be another hour, which would be 5. I hang around Memphis, go to Harbor Freight and look around and i get a call:

Hey i'll be honest with ya, if you do the transaction through here it'll be about 335. I had to lie to my boss because i got the tubing through a frinend of mine that works at another shop and i can give you a quote on the shaft the price here. I need to bring the shaft to you.

I call step dad and he and i both think i'm getting a pretty good deal: Both tubes re tubed, yolk, my parts installed and ballanced. everywhere else charges about 350 for a job like that and if you want one built it's about 450. I'm getting a new drive shaft here except the yolks, all new tubing. We both agreed to see this through.

Dude came to HFreight and went around to the side, and told me to to the same, he said, my boss might drive by and have a fit. I got the shaft and it looks good. I asked Dude if i had any problems who do i need to see and he say call my cell here's the number. He then said that he needed to take that quote and cancel the work order in their computers. I'm gathering he's pocketing the money for himself here. I felt like i was doing a drug transaction, something i've never done before. but it did catch him by suprise when i "showed up"

I'm going to prime and paint it yellow tomorrow.

sorry for the rant but i had to tell some one about this that might what to read. thanks sswj

oh, tomorrow before work i'm going to take and have the mufflers welded up.
