Air bag pressure?

My '79 C20 has air bags in the back. I've never had a vehicle with air bags before...what's the max pressure I should put in them? And what's the minimum pressure they should have? They're supposed to allways at least have a little air in them, right?

What kind of setup and type of bag do you have? If it's an air-over-leaf setup, I'd wager a guess of anywhere between 10 to 100 psi. Realistically, you should run the bag with enough air to put it at its' ride height. Depending upon your setup, you could run them without air, but it's not recommended.

Are they helper bags?

Yes, they're helper bags between the frame and leaf springs.

Oh well then. You only need to fill em if you have a load and want the extra help back there. Its prolly a bad idea to run any pressure in em without a load. It will just make the ride kinda funky.

Since you have an air-assisted setup, the bag is probably a sleeve-type. I would try to maintain a minimum of 10 psi when your truck is unloaded. By default, you will notice a slight spring rate increase, but it shouldn't be too noticeable. Under a load, I would stay under 100 psi.

Ahhh....it allways rides like crap anyway. :) Just wondering how high I can go before someting pops... :hm:

ZmOz-
You got a pic of your setup? I'm thinking that you may have sleeves or possibly bellows. Yeah, you could blow them if you overfill them or overextend them.

I know what you mean about the harsh ride. Growing up, Dad had a '3/4 ton camper special' with overload springs (and stiff Uniroyal 16" tires). Unloaded, the '73 rode rough. But, put a load on it or tow a trailer and it rode smooth.

Since you have air springs, you could remove the overload spring if you have one to smooth out the ride yet retain your load capacity.

I don't have a pic of the bags, but they look just like these:

Today I noticed one of them has a slow leak...
