put the new doors on
 

I changed the doors on my ’81 and put some on from a ’90 burb. The new doors have PW and PL. The PL work get but I’m having problems with the PW. Can someone explain this? I have 12V to the common side of the switch at all times. When I press the switch up or down I have power to both sides of the switch. WTF. If I disconnect the PW motor then I have power on one contact when I press up and I have power at the other contact when I press down. This seams right. Can anyone at explain to my why I have power on both contacts when I press up or down on the switch and the motor is hooked up?

Any one know how to take the motor out of the door? I loosened the four bolts that I thought held it in but it didn't budge.

You also need to drill out a couple of rivets to remove the motor :)

Than looks like a PITA. Anyone have any ideas on the power issue?

A power window works just like a door lock acuator does. When one wire gets 12v the other needs to get ground, when this happens the window motor will move up or down, depending on configuration. I believe the common power wire going to the switch should be purple, could be wrong. If you want I can draw a diagram on how to get the windows to work with relays and 4 momentary switches and e-mail it to you.

Sounds like it is just missing the gorund .You have 12 volts on each terminal but what do you have when you check across the terminals . What you have now is probably just a circuit looking for a ground . The 12 v will feed through the motor all the way to where it suppose to go to ground . Frank

So do you think I should take the doors off and scuff up the hinges to ensure I have a proper ground to the body? I think I’ll try and use a jumper wire on it first.

hotrodhomi I hope you don't mind if I slide in a related question on your post. My electric windows work, but at a VERY slooooooooooow pace. What would cause this? Could that also be a ground problem?

I checked the ground on my window motors yesterday. It was about .1ohm so that definitely not the problem. I also unhooked the right motor and tried to get the left side to work and vise versa. still no worky. Does someone have a wiring diagram for a '91 suburban? I wonder if one of the wires I cut that went to the back doors has anything to do with it. All things point to two bad motors but that’s a lot of work to get them out. I want to be sure about it.

crawdad: a bad ground could do it. also if your track is misaligned or pinching the window.
