67-72 Gauge Panel Removal
 

As promised here is a How-to on removing gauge panels. Principles should be the same regardless of style of dash you have.

1. First step is to unhook the battery (to keep from draining it with the lights on, unless you can remember to turn them back off).

2. Next remove the windshied wiper knob by loosening the screw holding it on.

3. Remove headlight switch by pulling knob out (basically turning headlights on)
then reach up under the dash and press the button on top of the switch and pull the knob the rest of the way out.

4. Remove the bezel rings from the wiper and headlight switches.

5. While you are under the dash, disconnect the speedo cable (you can almost make it out in the first pic.

6. Disconnect the oil pressure line (if so equipped), unplug the wiring harness from the gauge panel. You may also want to remove the bulbs from the top of the panel (turn signal indicator lights) to make it a little easier to remove the panel.

7. To make it a lot easier to remove, were gonna drop the steering column a little. First remove the Phillip screws holding the rubber boot retainer (1 in pic).
Then remove the 4 bolts holding the plate underneath (2 in pic).

8. Loosen the bolts clamping the steering column in place. It's not necessary to totally remove them.

9. Finally, remove the screws holding the panel in place. Lean the top of the panel toward you, remove turn signal bulbs (if not already done) and pull the optic fiber loose if you have auto column (it's on the inner side of the back of the speedo). Finish pulling the panel out.

10. Installation is the reverse of removal.

How about for trucks equipped with a choke cable? Can't figure out how that comes out

I've never seen one with a choke cable, so I don't know. I'm sure someone will chime in.

does the bezel for the the headlight switch just pop off?

The bezels for the headlight, wipers and choke (if equipped) are spun on. If they are too tight to remove by hand they do have two holes that you can poke the points of a pair of needle-nose pliars into to facilitate removal.

When i took out one with a choke it just unscrewed like the bezels do.
