Insurance for Classic Trucks

Hello,
I'm looking for an insurance company that can offer excellent coverage for my classic '68 Chevy Truck. My current insurance company will only cover the "Actual Book Value", but it doesn't take into account new parts added or new paint job. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Leroy
:)

Check out Hagerty's. They offer agreed value protection. Also, you only pay once for some items on the first vehicle so if your like me and have a few on, you can save alot of dough! :)

I just added my 3rd car on with them.

I have my 67 4x4 with Continental Western Group its insured for 10K and costs $218 a year, limit of 1000 miles a year and must be garaged.

I have northeast classic insurance on my 70' for 10 grand at a cost of $119 per year. Must be garaged and age 26 or over. Cheapest I have found so far. I had to email about 5 pics of the truck and I'm limited to 3000 miles per year but they offer other mileage plans.

Mixup 07-18-2005 11:21 AM

I have Grundys, $10,000 value $175 a year no mileage limit as long as it's for a car related function and that includes taking it for a drive. It has to be garaged also.

The book all of the insurance companies go by is NADA....they actually have a pretty good "book value" on our trucks......look under collectors cars @ http://www.nada.com any specialty insurance will be cheaper but you give up your right to use it as a truck.....Good luck.....Paul

Wow! I am between 8 and 18K! I'm cool with those #'s.

roadking 07-18-2005 03:55 PM

i have hagerty 15000 agreed value @140.00 per year. must ba garaged and used for pleasure only.

68Stepbed 07-18-2005 10:47 PM

I'm with ANPAC. $12,000 coverage 160 a year. Allowed 7500 miles a year.

PLavelle 07-18-2005 10:52 PM

I tried Hagerty, but in Mass. the truck cannot be modified (more than 50 horsepower over stock) so I am out of luck. I'm going to have to try some of the other companies. I would like to be able to drive it whenever its nice outside.

mrwilmoth 07-18-2005 11:38 PM

ive been looking forever for one, since I have a dui its hard. I have mercury right now but they dont cover the truck for ****.

67cst 07-18-2005 11:47 PM

you guys all have great deals compared to me, i pay roughly 575 bucks for 6 months. and thats only got book value, up here guys get their trucks appraised and then you are covered for every dollar you have in the truck

Zonaman 07-19-2005 11:09 AM

Here's my insurance story: Classic auto insurance from an outfit like Hagerty is pretty reasonable. They insure your ride for an agreed value but they limit your mileage & use. I couldn't live with limited miles, so I had the truck appraised ($14,000.00! Surprised the Hell out of me!) and insured it with MetLife for a stated value for about $700.00 (full coverage) a year here in Phoenix. That means it starts out worth that much and depreciates from there. I'm going to get it appraised every other year or when I do something major (like the Old Air unit I just slapped on! ) to upgrade it. Least this way if it gets cubed, I can buy another one from one of you guys and start over.

I have a question for all the people who have said that their vehicle "must be garaged." Does that mean there is some sort of clause that if the vehicle is sittin on your property, say your driveway, and someone either steals it, or vandalizes it, you won't be covered, because it wasn't "in the garage"? I've always wondered about that.

chevy71super 07-19-2005 11:40 AM

Good question. I will find out as I just applied for Haggerty. Quoted premium is $173 for $20,000 agreed value. I was paying Safeco about $600 for a vehicle I drive less than 1,000 miles a year at an agreed value of $9,000.

Mixup 07-19-2005 12:31 PM

I believe it must be stored in a garage at night. It can't be left outside all the time. If you have it parked in your driveway and gets ripped off it's covered.

briarpatch 07-19-2005 12:36 PM

When you guys it can't be used as a "work" truck, do you mean using it in a business, or do you mean it can't be used to do work (i.e., hauling home supplies from Lowes, taking trash to dump, moving furniture for buddy, etc.)?

GasHog396 07-19-2005 01:36 PM

I was looking at Hagerty's for my 67, but when I called, I found out that the truck would not be covered if you do any hauling (that includes trips to Home Depot) or are pulling a trailer. The vehicle also needs to be stored overnight in a locked garage/workshop (which isn't a prob for me). Since I want the utility of a truck, they were a no go. I recently bought a new car, so I needed to find cheaper insurance. State Farm was sucking over $800 outta me every 6 month on 2 cars and the truck, with no collision coverage and clean driving records with no claims. Even worse, it was going to cost an additional $360 for the new car for just six months. OUCH!!! After comparing several companies, I ended up going with Progressive. They are 1/2 of what State Farm was wanting with the same coverage. I've got 3 cars and the truck, all with $100K/$300K liability & uninsured, comp with $100 ded, and collision with $1000 ded on new car (02 Buick Regal GS). Best part is, it is less than $1200 per year for all the vehicles. :metal: (That's if they don't raise their rates after six months  ).

I had been with State Farm for over 22 years, but $100 a month difference is something I couldn't overlook.

I use Haggerty on my old cars.

People say Haggerty has a yearly mileage limit. All I know is they have never asked me for an odometer reading, ever. I figure they must not worry too much about mileage.

demi 07-19-2005 02:06 PM

I too use Hagerty, and when I signed up, they never asked for an odometer reading. I just had to show proof of insurance for mine and my wife's daily drivers. I think they figure if you have other vehicles as your daily drivers, you're not going to drive it that much.

Personally, I'd rather have my other vehicles get banged up then my old truck. I take it to weekly shows on the weekends, and I'm allowed to use it for pleasure drives. Now, if I was to take it to lowes to pick up lumber or something and some idiot smashes into me, I'm basically screwed. That's what my other pickup's for

Hagerty

I have Hagerty on my '33 Ford

I found it interesting that in MASS they won't let it be 50 horse over stock. I bet they would insure it if you insured it as a "hot rod" or modified. Cause I'm insured in Rhode Island with hagerty on the '33 and i'm pretty sure the 396 chevy has more than 50 Horse than the original 4cylinder or 8cylinder for that matter.

I just read through my Hagerty policy and it doesn't say that they would exclude coverage (not cover your vehicle) if it wasn't in a garage. So if it had to live outside for a night or you were @ a show over night then there should be no problem. they just don't want it living outside 24/7 as it is a much greater liability to them.
That's my opinion on the subject, I have to call them anyway to change my garaging address so when i do i'll ask about that and see what Hagarty's policy on that is.

Mixup 07-19-2005 03:28 PM

If you are on your way to Lowes for lumber and get hit thats when you tell the insurance company that you were on your way to get the front end aligned or the AC charged.

70GMCer 07-19-2005 04:46 PM

I've been with "American Collectors Ins." for ages now and have never had a problem. I have a $5000.00 full coverage/no deductable for $79.00 a year. I put in a claim 6 months ago for a broken windshield and all the wanted was an extimate and a picture of the damage.

I thought it was something like that. Thanks for the info. I can't get haggarty 'cause I live in an apartment. If I insure a second vehicle with liability with geico it's only an extra $200 per year, but I'm sure I'd get screwed in a wreck.
