Shift Tower Removal Question (Muncie SM465)

Hi
I am a newbie that has been working hard to restore a 1968 C10 Stepside. I was going to remove the engine and tranny at the same time and ran into a problem. I removed the bolts from the shift tower and tried to take the whole thing out as an assembly. It would only move about a half an inch upward. I then suspected that the shifter may need to be removed first so I tried to drive the roll pin out but then figured out that there are two of them installed from opposite sides. Does anyone know how to remove the shift tower? I'm stuck!

Thanks,

Tyler

I think you need to put it in reverse for the shift forks to clear to lift up the cover, been a while. The shift lever is not your problem. However, you'll probably want to remove that as well, (after putting it in reverse), to do that all you do is press down and twist the spring loaded cup that the roll pins engage. A pair of pliers comes in handy for this.

Thanks a bunch, I will give it a try.

From recent teardown I had instructions that got the cover off like so: engage into reverse but just slightly entering the nesh, then pull up.

The shift cane is easy" Push down with screwdriver in right hand and turn counterclockwise on the tin retainer that is over the spring and ball. This releases the retainer from the roll pins and shifter cane comes straight up. Neutral is fine for this.
