gmc vs chevy guage clusters
i was noticing that dakota digital made a sweet guage setup for the 64-66 chevy. but the small notes detail that it will not fit a gmc. is the dash opening for a gmc different? i really was looking forward to running that factory style look with the digital for the chevy. i'm not really a fan of the gmc guage cluster. is the chevy dash recessed more around for the guage cluster than the gmc. or will the chevy guage panel fit in the gmc dash. if not i guess i'll have to go with one of the custom 5 or 6 guage panels they offer. thanks for any input.

Well, from what I know and hopefully someone else can confirm, but the only difference between the Chevy and GMC gauges are the connections on the back. The GMC are, well, i forget what it is called, but the back of the instrument cluster is different. I plan on overcoming this in my 65 GMC by buying an American Autowire kit for these years of trucks. It has everything to use either guage set, and works with the chevy headlights or GMC. I will try to find out what the difference is called and let you know.

I'm not sure about the dash opening, but the GMC uses a 1 piece cluster, and the chevy uses a bezel that the cluster mounts up to.

Not The Same!
The Instrument Cluster on GMC "IS NOT THE SAME AS CHEVY" not even close.
As far As I know, NONE of the aftermarkets guys make a Instrument Cluster that will fit a GMC, but I could be wrong, I have not looked for one myself. Here is what the Stock GMC Instrument Cluster Looks Like. This Is what I'm doing to get a Custom GMC Instrument Cluster for my 1965 GMC One Ton project. Others have made custom dash panels for their GMCs, so it can be done, but you won't do it with parts from one of those dang old Chevrolet trucks. |
Hey Jolly, glad to see you on this site too! I've looked around quite a bit for a custom dash that was already machined to fit the GMC dash. I seriously have only found ONE place that has them. It's http://boeseengineering.com/, and you have to call and talk with them since it's a custom dash not listed on their website.
You can also see pics here of someone doing an install: http://hometown.aol.com/charcancel/index.html. I personally think it looks great, and plan on using this on my '66. I may go with a black dash not chrome though. |

That is not the cluster I have on my 65 GMC. I have no idea where you got that it is only a GMC and specifically a 65? I know mine is stock and again, looks nothing alike. |
Stock Cluster for GMC
Hey ozzyracing,
The Stock Cluster used in all US built light trucks from 1962 to 1966 was this one... http://www.6066gmcguy.org/DashStuff/Dashpanel-6266.jpg This one was used in all GMC Light Trucks for 1960-1961 & in some of the 3500 and larger trucks from 1960-1966 and in all Canadian Built 6066 GMC Trucks... http://www.6066gmcguy.org/DashStuff/1960-61-Dash.sm.jpg If it does not look like any of these, what does it look like? Can you post a pic of it? |
I have a Canadian Built '65 GMC and it has the larger of the two clusters in it

For comparison, here's one for a 64 Chevy

soooo, the answer to my question is what? will the chevy guage panel fit into the dash of the gmc? i know the obvious difference in looks and hook up. i just want to know if it will work or not without modifying the dash.
