Dually tires
I need to put new tires on my dually. I want to put the tallest tire that will fit on the truck. The main concern is keeping the dual tires from rubbing when heavily loaded. My truck ia a 1982 1 ton cab-n-chassis model. What are the tallest tires that will fit.

you have a flat bed on the back? you should be able to run atleast 33" i would imagine, tall and skinny though... i run 32s on a stock (with HD front coils) 1/2 ton.. 33"s are abouts as big as you can go unfront without some lift or fender trimming.. my 32s are getting rather close....

Yea, its a flatbed dually. you can see come pics of it here http://groups.msn.com/Racerpics/uglytruck.msnw?Page=1 be sure to look at page 2 for pics of the finished truck. As you can see fender well clearance is not a problem. The problem is with the dual tires rubbing together when loaded. Has anyone put spacers between the wheels?

Thanks for the pics Prerunner but I don't quite think that the tires on your Crew cab will fit. Did you use spacers in the duals? A couple of you mentioned 33" do you have the size of the tire that is 33" tall? Some say that a 235-85-R16 will work they are 31.73" tall. I'm afraid that they will rub together when heavily loaded. It appears that as tires get taller they also get wider. Width is the problem here. It currently has 215-85-R16 which are 30.39" tall.

Go with a higher ply tire and you should be set. I have 10 plies on my truck right now. Even with a New Holland skid steer on the trailer, the tires don't even budge yet and they are 15PSI under pressured. They are suppose to be at 80PSI but I have them set at 65 so I don't shatter my teeth on bumps. If I went to 80, I don't think those things would move with a load on them!

unfortunately that is not my truck, wish it was though. I just liked it enough to save the pic...just call it motivation..

On the factory dually rims, my crew cab & chassis, I'm using Cooper 7.50-16LT SRM all around. Had no problems when it was a flat bed. They are 31.80 inch diameter. When I went to a fleetside bed, I had to add a 2" suspension lift out back because of inner wheel housing rub.

QUOTE] Thanks, this is the type of info I'm after. Was your truck originally a cab-n-chassis or pickup? Cab-n-chassis trucks have narrower rear ends and a longer wheelbase. I found this out when I considered putting a regular bed on mine. |
Mine was a cab & chassis truck with a flatbed installed by DeJana Trucking. I removed the flatbed, since it was rotting off and swapped on a standard 8' fleetside bed. I have used the 235-85-16 combo on several trucks without issues of tires rubbing. Two trucks were sevice trucks I had when worked on grocery stores other is the dually that I tow with. The taller tires helped out all trucks.

We use Michelin 235/85/16 load range E on our flatbeds and dumps on our landscape trucks. Nice thing about these tires is they come stock on new Ford and Chevy 3/4 and 1 ton trucks. I can pick up sets of 4 that are new take offs with usually less than 500 miles on them for no more than $200.00. You can't beat that. Great tires, can haul a load, and really help my bottom line at purchase time.
