Dash speaker replacement question
 

I have two KICK ASS Infinity 462.5-CFP Kappa series 4"x6" plates just sitting in my basement. They were used for less than 6 months and really rock ass. I paid $160 for them new and had them in my '03 GMC truck. They have a huge magnet and will handle 180w peak power, sound AWESOME.

I am contemplating whether to sell them or not. I am wondering: has anyone ever stuck a pair of 4"x6" plates in the center of their dash easily, or is everyone just sticking one up there? I would really like to get rid of the crappy Pioneer speakers that the PO mounted to the metal kickpanel part of the cab and put these in the dash for better sound instead.

I put two 4x6 Planet audio plates in my 64. I used an old factory speaker, cut out a few "ribs", mounted them side by side using silicone & 1/4 nuts & bolts. Mounted factory speaker as it was before. Covered them w/some that speaker cloth from Radio Shack, no one can tell. You don't get the sound quality they would have if they were spaced further apart, but they sound great to me. Brian

Shifty. Do you have a stock radio or a CD player in your dash? Or did you do the glovebox install. You might run into clearance problems if you have the head in the stock location. The magnets on those Kappas look pretty thick (hard to tell from the pics) and they might hit the top of the head unit. I just installed a stock am radio and a single 10ohm speaker (speaker is a single 4 x 6 Delco from a 92 Olds) and it fit ok (after bending the stock speaker bracket a gazillion times, lol) but there wasn't lots of room to clear the radio (magnet is pretty small on the delco speaker also). What kind of head or amp were you driving those Kappas with (just curious). Doug

It also depends on if you have A\C or not, there is a lot less clearance up there with A\C center vent in the way.

No A/C here. If I got A/C it would be aftermarket.

You might be OK, the only real way to find out is to try. I'm looking for something to put in there myself but I don't have as much room, the A\C center vent and hoses take up about half the space. One tip on working in there is to pull the glovebox cardboard.

Nice pics! Now I guess it would help if I knew the damned thing had a speaker bracket in the first place ;)

I'm putting (4) new 6½"s in my DD today, so I'll hafta check afterwards. I might be able to get both vehicles done today.

64fleet. Looks good! Neon Larry makes a good point in regards to the glovebox (mine was already out when I did it). One other thing I found was removing the glovebox door also, its worth removing and will make it easier. I ran my am antenna directly under the dash pad location and fabbed some brackets using some stock holes in the metal dash (I didn't want to install it externally), I hope it will pull in the stations alright. I'll soon find out when I get my wiring harness. Doug
