Final voyage ...
I always see people posting about their maiden voyage...today I took my final voyage in the truck with the 250/L6. The trek was only around the block (open headers got all the neighbors out :D). Felt good to drive it, but I think I'm really going to appreciate having double the number of speeds, having it on the floor instead of the column and three times the power.
I will probably have a couple of trannies and an inline 6 for sale soon. Josh said he might want one, but it's up in the air right now. If you see anyone looking for one in the near future, let me know. |
:cong: and :buh: to the old engine :gi:

What trans is going in; a six speed?

6 speed (T56). I'm doing the LS1 swap. I'll be writing up a FAQ through the process. I'm actually much happier after talking to Josh in IRC last night. I didn't realize a motor like the LS1 would get 25-33mpg on the highway.
I've got so much crap in the engine bay right now - the Z-bar for the clutch linkage, the add'l linkage for the tranny on the column, throttle linkage, all of this stuff I get to get rid of (including the wiring). I can't wait! I wish I could start right now ... |
Cool! I am wanting a T56 also, so I look forward to seeing your post of the swap.

I've heard of 25-7 mpgs @ 65 ~ 70mph from f-bodies w/T-56's but never 33mpg.
Our auto equipped 2002 ls1 T/A will get about 25mpg on the road & my buddies 6spd ls1 Z28 got about the same (27mpg) when he took a trip to Austin a few weeks ago. I wouldn't expect it from these trucks because of the aerodynamic factors but even 20mpg would be nice. |
It all depends, I knwo several peopel who get 30+ out of 6 spd LS1s on teh highway, the autos get less (25-28) cause of hte added power loss, n .7 vs .5 overdrive on the highway. I've seen automatic C5s get 30-31 highway with auto or the 6spd, it all depends on the driver/car. I've talked ot a few guys with LT1s in 67-72s and they all seem ot average 20-25 highway, so 25 isnt unreasonable out of an LS1, my stock 350 will get 18mpg when its in tune....

Oh well, another one bites the dust. Don't get me wrong I'd take an LS1 six speed combo in my truck any day, but I think I'll stick with the hot rodded 250 just to be different. Acutally, I'd sooner put the LS1 combo in my Z28. I'll be the first to say I'd love to ditch the 3 spd for at least a 4 spd.

Awesome, congrats! Although depending on your axle gears I doubt an LS1 will ever see even 25mpg. Good luck!

I'm okay with it. I have a couple of spares if I ever want to go back, but I doubt I will. I'll miss the simplicity of the 250, but ... I'll enjoy the performance, better gas mileage and having the shifter on the floor. |
