A/C compressor question
 

Hey guys, just picked up a cherry 76 which runs great. Only problem so far is when you run the a/c the compress squeals whenever it runs. I recall someone telling me that the bearings dry up after a while on them. I was wondering if anyone can tell me if this is true and if so can it be fixed fairly cheaply or will compressor have to be replace?

As always any help or info is greatly appreciated.

Its your bearings you need a new compressor, I know five people this has happened to.

Can it be repaired? If not, any idea of cost of new one?

Well it seems I may be an expert on buying these thing (read the post on what you got done this weekend). I priced some at checker (kragan) $116 for a rebuild but you have to buy the accumulator $42 to get the year warranty. A new comprssor is $370 and they still require an accumulator and you may need new hoses $120. Make sure you have the system evacuted and replace the orephus (sp?) filter. If your compressor is freezing up you'll need to do this. I priced several shops to do mine, estimated from 1200 - 1700.

These prices are here in Phoenix, the heat eats a/c systems.

What if it only squeals sometimes when you turn it on, or when you give it gas it starts squealing? would that be the bearings? isn't there a clutch on the pully that can go bad?

I'm glad somebody started a thread about this cause mine is crapping out on me, and it don't start to cool down in louisiana until its warming up again. :crazy:

Yes, it can be repaired (ie bearings replaced). The compressor on my blazer was original (25 yrs old ) and it recently locked up or maybe not locked up completly but it broke the belt anyway. I was going to replace the compressor but the guy told me there was a chance it was just the bearing. Replaced it and it and its been fine ever since.

He didn't even have to evacuate the system. Parts and labor @$95. But don't count on that price unless you know somebody.

BTY, I would unplug it until you figure something out, cause if your clutch freezes up then you are screwed.
