Starter Problems...Help

OK, I have a 72 K1500 with a sbc 350, Turbo 350 and headers (truck came with the headers) that I bought recently. The issue was if you drove the vehicle on a hot day, shut it off, and then tried to restart...nothing. If it sat for 15 miuntes or so it would fire right back up.
Today I replaced the battery, both cables, the starter and solenoid (with new heat shield), and redid the wiring going to the starter.
Now, when it gets hot after driving a while it will start but about 50% of the time you hit the ignition switch I get a loud clunk and the motor will not spin. If you hit the key a couple more times it will fire right up.
Suggestions?

Remote solenoid. Easy fix.

The clunk might be that you need to shimmy your starter.

A.P. and jhow thanks for the responses. I was hoping not to have to use a remote solenoid. There were ZERO shims on the starter when I pulled it off. I am thinking about putting 1 or 2 shims on it to see how that affects the operations. Do you think that will possibly work?

72 GMC K1500 my old starter did not have any shims either but with a new starter it was making a really nasty noise when starting. After installing shims my truck is now starting good. I also had a remote starter, but I disconnected it after installing a heat shield on the starter solenoid. Here is a pic of the heat shield I installed. Its been over a year since I installed it and I have not any starting problems yet.

A.P. Thanks for the advice. I have the same heat shield installed. Hopefully it will work as well as yours did. How many shims did you add to get the starter to work correctly?

I had to use 2 shims.
