Busted Shock Mounts

My first post. Just bought an '84 stepside.

The right front shock broke free from its top mount, and the rusted bottom bolt broke in half when I tried to remove it. Should I just drill out the rest of the bottom bolt and forget about the threads? And will a couple of large washers on either side of the now enlarged top mount hole do the trick to keep that end in place? Thanks!

Chris

Welcome to the board.

On the broken top mount, if it's the stud that broke, you typically get new ones when you purchase new shocks. So it's just R&R.

If the hole in the frame that the stud bolts to is 'reamed', then it's more involved. The best method is basically what you described only you'll need to weld those washers in place to keep everything from moving around.

Yep. Drill it, knock it out w/a hammer, whatever it takes. Then just get a new bolt (if you don't already get one w/the new shocks).

If you need more info just ask away.

another option is the bolt in upper shock mounts that are available at places like suicide doors and air ride technologies. in any case you will have to reinforce the area
