'68 GMC to '68 Chevy
It looks like I only have to take the headlight buckets off the GMC core support and remount a single light bucket in the Chevy holes. Install a '67 - '68 grill and the job is done...right?

Had a potential buyer ask about that and I compared my '67 Chev and my '68 GMC and it appears that they can be switched. If he buys it...I am sure that he will give the headlight buckets, harness and grill to whomever wants to do a conversion from a Chevy to a GMC and make it right with the universe... :metal:

I like 69-70 chevy, but all GMC, and yes if anything you should be swapping it the opposite way...there are too many chevys out there as it is...

The hood latch is slightly different, the chevy grill will work with the GMC hood latch but the GMC will not work well with the chevy latch. Look at them and you'll see why, it has to do with the center bar of the GMC grill. The pic is the GMC style, the handle jos off to one side...

raggedjim, Interesting...hood latch, front bumper, wiring harness (or rewire for high beams), core support mod, grille and that should be it...thanks.
I am working on a trade for another 50th Longhorn so it may all be a mute point anyway. I need a set of 50th Longhorns...more rare than GMC's...unless it was a GMC Longhorn (don't recall what they were called). |
You do not need a new wiring harness. Just leave the extra unplugged, or cut it off. I just did the swap, GMC harness worked fine with Chevy headlights.

71swb4x4, So the low beam headlight harness conector will actuate the high beams when I use a single headlight bulb...cool! I don't have a GMC wiring diagram so I could not check it.

no, sierra grande was the top of the line model...but didnt necessarily have the super long bed...

Discovered this little gem about the early years of GM. "William Crapo ("Billy") Durant of Durant-Dort Carriage Company, Flint, Michigan, takes control of Buick Motor Company on November 1, 1904." My Dad was a big Buick fan and bought a new one every other year. I am sure he will appreciate knowing one of the early CEO's of Buick was named Billy Crapo...LOL! |
Reliance Motor Truck Co. of Owosso, Michigan?? Hey now that is hitting close to home!! Actually in a local bar here they have a very old picture of one of their trucks parked next to a horse and buggy with the words... "Which method do you prefer" under it. Pretty funny how my tiny little town gets mentioned from time to time.

Grabouwski (spelling???) Motor Company was the originator of GMC, and I think it was 1902 or 03...they later sold....possably to reliance...this is the history I have always read and been told anyways.
On the chevy to GMC thing...that is correct on the harness...just leave the extra plug dangle... it'll be fine. At least we are talking the 68 chevy front end...which DOES give GMC grills a run for there money in the beauty pagent. ;) So you are gonna try for the 2nd 50th huh? Sweet! The GMC was called Custom Camper...not to be confused with the Custom Camper option package with HD springs and shocks and a sway bar. :crazy: |

Andy, You are correct...I just could not find that history site for the GMC Trucks but did find the mention of it in the GM site...it did not go back far enough with the GMC history.
I AM going for the second 50th...I should be hung...and if my wife finds out...I will be! ANDY I found another GMC History link...evidently the Grabowsky Bros. did incorporate under the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company name... "Max and Morris Grabowsky built their first truck in 1900. In 1902, they organized the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company and began production to build one-ton trucks. This company was the beginning of GMC Trucks. In 1905, Albert North and Harry Hamilton from the Pontiac Spring & Wagon Works (PS&WW) built the first Pontiac Automobile and also acquired control of the the Rapid Motor Vehicle Co. They became key forces in the operations of the company. In 1909, General Motors acquired the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan, the predecessor of GMC Truck. A Rapid become the first truck to conquer Pikes Peak in 1909. After the General Motors Company was founded in 1908, it soon became known as one of the largest car manufacturers in the world. In 1909, the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company (GMC) joined with GM. Andy, Here is the link that shows one of the original stock certificates with the company name. This stock certificate, No. 6, was issued in 1905. The company may have existed as a sole proprietorship or partnership as Grabowsky RMVC prior to incorporation as the Rapid Motor Vehicle Company.
