1951 Fuel Tank Relocation
Who has the best kit for moving the stock fuel tank to the rear on a 51? Any suggestions?
|
used a tank from a 76 camero behind the rear diff in the frame rails on my 52. easy to do and works well.

I have a panel but I just fabbed up a mount out of half inch square tubing and put it between the rails behind the diff. If you can get your hands on a panel/suburban tank it works like a champ! |
I used one from 92-97 camaro/firebird because I am running fuel injection.

Late 80s chev van and you can use and in tank FI pump or replace with just the regular pickup tube. Think it holds 21-22 galons and dont drag the ground . About 10 bucks in a junk yard if not free. You can use stock straps and all.
Little notch in frame for fuel fill in left rear fender.Check for bed clearance as some guys mount the tank too high and have to go back and move the bed floor up. ;) Dont ask LOL |
Very sweet truck Hart Rob. Other than a fuel cell, is there anything that would enable me to have a filler neck in the bed? Say under a hinged plank in the bed? Phat, yours looks awesome too, but i don't want to cut any holes in the fender for the filler.

65-69 mustang tank would probably work. Problem with fuel filler in bed, you have to be very careful with the gas pump hose!

I am working on this truck for a friend, and he he wants to keep this as "Stock" as possible. i.e. keeping the stock filler neck as a "dummy", and have the actual filler under say a hinged plank in the bed. I could go with a plastic cell, but that would be a little racey.
Anyone heard of Kent products? I was told they may have what I'm looking for in a steel or stainless tank. I know this will need some custom touches to make it work, but I'm open to any and all suggestions. Thanks for all of the response so far, this is a cool site. |
I'll definatley look at the stang tank also, thanks rob

I like Phat's idea. I may end up going that way. I was going to price FuelCellGuy up in Mineola but, I'm not ready yet so I haven't emailed him. I figured it would be in the 400+ range. Just got a new catalog from the Truck Shop in Orange, Ca. They seem to have a good selection of parts and the pricing is reasonable. The had a tank for 419.00

Phat,
Nice looking truck, what kind of rear end set up is that? Shaun. |
Shaun that one has all c-4 corvette stuff under it front and rear. 84-88 small brake so you can use 15 inch rally wheels. Anything newer and you get bigger brakes so its 16 in or bigger wheels. :bling:
51GMC if you use the stang tank try and mount it below the rails with steel spacers so it can move a bit. I used them a long time ago but the way they mounted on the flange the seams started to leak after 1 1/2 year because i mounted it like the stang was mounted through the bolt holes. Frame moves around a bit and it made the tank leak. Learn from my screw ups  ;) |
