Sticky Break Pedal - need advice
 

Hey everyone. I just replaced the brake booster in my Blazer. Now the brake pedal is sticky, as in it will depress, and the vacuum boost seems to aid in the pedal feel ok uner braking, but when I let off the brakes, the pedal stays down, and does not retract. You have to put your foot under the pedal and pull it back up.

I would appreciate any information relating to the mechanism that is supposed to draw the break pedal back after depressing it. There are no return springs in the mechanism under the dash.

How is your master cylinder? I think the fluid pressure is supposed to return the pedal.

Jonboy, that's a good thought. I installed a brand new master cylinder, but I have only blead the connections at the mastercylinder. Maybe I should blead the 4 corners, and see if the fluid pressure response improves.

Can anyone confirm bleading the 4 wheels will improve pedal response?

Check the plastic valve at vacuum line.

definitely bleed the system. It cant hurt anyhow. If you did install a new master and didn't bleed the lines, there is probably still some air in there.

Make surte the sole of your shoe is free of gum, lol.....

Today I bled the brakes and checked the vacuum valve on the booster, which is holding vacuum fine, but there is still a problem. When the engine is running, the brake pedal does not retrieve fully. It only returns a third of the way, and the brakes are staying depressed. You have to put your foot under the pedal and pull the brake pedal up.

When the engine is off, and the vacuum released from the booster, the pedal returns fully.

Has anyone experienced a similar problem, and can make suggestions?

Is it a rebuilt or new booster? Sounds like a warranty claim possibly. Since it works without the booster, I would bet that is where your problem lies. On the bright side, you don't have to take teh master loose to replace the vacuum booster.

PROBLEM SOLVED - Well, as silly as it sounds, it was something trivial, but hard to find.

I left a washer off the bolt on the break pedal that secures the brake light activator. Without this washer, the bolt was hanging up on the steering shaft. Nothing related to the brake system itself.

I guess that makes baldmike the winner because his suggestion was closest to the actual problem, HA! In all seriousness Jonboy and 85X3, I appreciate your input on this problem.

The breaks are working great now!
