I found a 1972 Chrevy Blazer that has been sitting in someones yard for a while not to far from where I live. So, yesterday I decided to stop and see if it was for sale. The guy said yes, but someone had came by and put a $250 deposit for it over a month ago and hasn't came back. He told me he would sell it for $1500 as it sits. It is a 4x4 with a 350 engine and a 4 speed maual transmission. It has a lot of rust, but he said it runs good. The battery was dead so he was going to jump it for me but I couldn't stay no longer. I am going to try and go back tonight and here it run and maybe get some pictures. He is the second owner and he used it as a hunting vehicle. I told the guy since he already had a $250 deposit he could sell it to me for $1,250 and he agreed.

I don't know much about these year vehicles because I was more interested in the 1973 - 1987 year trucks. But after browsing through forums on this site and looking at pictures of your guys's trucks I think I am interested in getting a 1967 - 1972 to restore.

You guys will probably understand some of the stuff this guy was telling me. He said that the motor had 375 hp when it was brand new. Is this true? He was telling me it had this much hp because it was some type of work truck and they only came in orange or green. I forget the technical name he was calling it. This one is green.

What else should I be looking for or asking this guy about this truck?

the 375 horse was a big block...and if not mistaken, it woulda been in a chevelle.
Work trucks came in what ever color you wanted... green or orange only... never heard this one. Go with what you can see. The price don't sound too awfull bad, assuming it is a good runner and dependable. Extensive rust will be a pain...esp on a blazer.

Heh, the guy who left the deposit will not be a happy camper.

What is the rule of thumb on deposits? How long do you sit on the truck before you pocket the money? Are you obligated to return the money? Id imagine, legally, if you dont have a recipt, you aint gettin jack back, but jus wonderin.

The guy that is selling the truck told the guy he as 30 days to come and give him the rest of the money and it has been over 30 days. I don't know if there was paperwork involved or not.

He got the work truck color thing mixed-up.Those are "Fleet" colors that can only be ordered by fleet accounts where there are multiple vehicles ordered.Of course,dealers can order fleet colors if they want.Omaha Orange,Woodland Green,School Bus Yellow(or whatever they call it),Red,tan,and Frost White are available,whether in the model year offerings or not.It doesn`t sound like you should put alot of stock in his info.Use your judgement.Look at the floor,rear quarters(in & out),sills,and w/s frame.

Regarding a deposit, I'd set a timeframe.
A month is too long IMO - it's fair game :cool:

375hp 396 engines were available in a few passenger cars. But if he says 350 w/375 horse he's got some facts wrong :D

If it's worth it to you buy it. As far as the deposit goes that's between the seller and the other guy.

There is such a thing as a 350/375 but it never came in a truck and isn't likely to be found in one unless someone has a wrecked Corvette/SS Nova/COPA Camaro and no sense of what a numbers matching motor is worth to someone restoring a car that came with one.

Since you're asking for advice, I'll give you my take on this.

I had rather buy a blazer with NO rust and no drive train than buy one with rust that runs good... The body work on these, if done properly, will run up some serious time and $$$...

I have learned my lesson the hard way, engines are easy to find, and are usually a small piece of the price of a restoration... repairing a rusty tub can be done, but you'll need lots of time, money, buddies, cusswords, mig wire and gas, and beer...

You also failed to mention your whereabouts.. if you are in LA, then I wouldn't give 100 bucks for that thing.. if you are in Illinois, saddly enough, it would get top dollar. :rolleyes:

Except the LT5 Corvette ZR1, I don't remember a Vette with a 350/375HP.
That Nova has a crate motor, I don't think Chevy produced a 350/375HP prior to the ZR1?

wasnt there was a 375 horse 327 motor in old corvettes

1964 and 1965 did, the rare L84 fuelies :D

BTW -- I agree about rust.

It is a lot easier to come up with a good engine and tranny than it is to fix extensive rust, especially in a Blazer. At least us PU guys can go Frankenstein and mix and match sections of the body to take care of soem of that. With a Blazer you can't just go get a new bed. lol

I don't remember a 375 hp 350 for our trucks. I think what happens in alot of cases is a previous owner will unknowingly give you inacurate info based on what they were told by other previous owners. For instance, When I bought my truck the owner said yep its a 6 bolt heavy half and the glovebox option said it had the heavy duty suspension so we assumed it WAS a heavy half and I didn't know that this was completely wrong as GM did not make a heavy half from 67-72. Maby the guy who put the $250.00 down on it talked to someone and decided it would be too costly to do all the body work and decided to find one with a better body on it with little or no rust. When you put money down like that to hold something for you, you do not get it back. After 30 days-heck no.

For $1250 I would buy it, take the top off it, and drive the crap out of it regardless of rust. These blazers are fun, and rust just adds some character. I'm not sure I am ever going to fix the rust on my '72. It's too much fun to drive to park it for very long and fix it. :)
