Finally
finally found one. the unicorn!!! at least to me it was. a 72 5 bolt rear end. got it the other day for $200 bucks canadian. that is like, $180 U.S.D. it was a smokin deal. i've got it in the garage, now time to rebuild it. new bearings, drums,shoes,spring kit, and some fresh oil. can't wait to actually put it on and install rear bags, put new 5 spokes on and finally set it on the ground and see her stance. will let you know soon enough how she looks. :)

Glad to hear you found what you were looking for. That just so happens to be the exact thing I have my eye out for now my self. A 67-72 5 lug rear end with decent gearing.

I got lucky when the '69 stepside I bought had already been upgraded to 5 lug all around. The I swapped all that stuff onto my '69 Burb.

Let me ask you guys, do the 67-72 rearends use springs as well or are they leafs? Is that why it was the unicorn? :D

The 67-72 do also use coil springs, so no need for an modifaction. That is why people tend to sway away from the later 73-87 (91 burb) rear ends is because they only offered leaf springs in those years. If you are baggin it and having to build all new brackets, no big deal. If you are looking for a bolt in replacement you have another thing coming.

That is what I thought and figuredI would try and find one if it existed as well. I can weld, but if I don't have to do the pinion angle and all that, why should I? ;)

El Caballo. the 71 and 72 rearends use coils. that is why they are so desired, cause they can bolt right on. they are getting harder and harder to find. for me it was a 6 month wait trying to find one for the right price. i've seen lots on the board, but shipping to canada, no thanks. around here they are $500 at most places, and most parts trucks people want way to much for. My brother-in-law found me one for $150 but he is 5 hours away, and no way to get it here. time,fuel prices, etc. so to me, that is why i call it the unicorn, but that really isn't right either, a unicorn is a fabled creature that does not exsist. i got one now, so i'll call it a sasquach now. you know it exsists, it's just about getting your hands on one. your best bet is to find a 71 or 72 parts truck with disks on the front, then you have a perfect donor.

also El Caballo, one more thing, you mentioned a 73-87 front end, you don't need the whole front end, just the a-arms,disks,brake parts etc., spindles,and tie rods and hardware. much easier than changing the whole front end. good luck

thanks matt, that would help out alot. when i go looking for replacement parts for this rearend, what am i looking for. i know, drum,shoes,spring kit for brakes, what else, bearings??? what are they called? and of course change the oil.

Gord, agreed, just easier to say I'm getting the whole front end since really that is what is happening. I can get a clip for $250 US, and I will begin my seach for a yeti in Tejas.

Hahah , Chad and I stopped at stan makita's , somewhere in bc at like 1 in the morn ,on the idaho trip. Umm on my diff I did the axle bearings? I cant remeber what they are called the ones in the ends of the axle tubes, and new seals, new lube and posi addative, all new brake hard ware and showes wheels cylinders etc.

Matt/Gord did i hear you right when you said your brother-in-law found you a 71-72 diff for $1505 hours away from brooks ?? Would that be in Red Deer ?? I'm gonna need one eventually for my rig. Thanks

Yea gords bro inlaw found him a diff for $ 150 but hes out in saskatchewan
that wrecken in bowden may have a few , we should make a trip out there before snow falls. |
I was hoping 5 hours from brooks was right around Red Deer. I pushed my truck to 80-85 on the way home she had a good workout but definately a handful, no familay sedan at that speed.

I have a 10 bolt/ 5 lug rear end (not sure of the gear ratio) in my 62' right now that will be coming out, it is already set up for pinion angle and rear coils etc. and will be replaced with a 72' 12 bolt (3.73) posi rear I found in the local wrecking yard. Gonna do rear Wilwood oversized disk brakes. I wont need the 10 bolt rear if your interested, your 173.5 miles NE of me on the otherside of Amarillo, TX. |
jason, i'm only about 2 1/2 hours from reddeer as the crow flies. and only about 1 1/2 hours from calgary, that's crusin'. i still might get my bro-in-law to get it for me, doesn't hurt to have a spare. later
