Glovebox Radio
 

I am installing a deck in my glovebox and returnig the am radio to the dash for a cleaner look. Thank God the PO did not cut the dash. Here are some pics.

I measured, then measured again, made a few templates from cardbord, took some measurments from the old box. I then made a prototype out of cheap tin and seen how that fit. Made small improvements then made a box from 1/16" flat aluminum. Test fit the box( have to install in 2 pieces to fit thru the hole). I them marked the hole for the radio and cut out.

Masked off the cage for the radio, then gave a light sanding. I went to Wal-mart and picked up a can of Granet spray paint( Black with Green specs)

Was that a standard "Single Din Mount" you are using for the deck? Was wondering where you can buy the deck mounting and hardware.....that's a slick looking setup...

Very nice and looks pretty easy to make also..... I may just mount the radio in the glove box and not cut my dash...

kelsfine69- Nice work!. Here are the pics I found of my old setup. Mine was crude compared to yours but I used it for 2 years with no problems. My truck had the AC liner in it when I bought it so I used that design to my advantage. Yours will be much stronger since it's metal. Here is a pic of my tin cage I made and "L" brakets riveted to the cardboard and the ABS that hides them.

Looks like a new product idea for the vendors, should it be metal, plastic or fiberglass?

Paint is good and dry, and as I said before it has to go in, in 2 pieces

Looks great man! Keeps the radio in decent arms reach and still maintains the stock look.

Slide the tunes in, install the trim, and the rest is wiring. There is enough room for the stereo not to hit the inside of the glovebox. I bought a deck with a remote but its hard to find a deck that works with a "frequency" not inferred like all new deck nowadays. They can remote some inferred "EYES" on some decks I've been told. So the glovebox has to be open to operate with the remote. Not a big deal just put in a good disk. Also my truck does not have A/C so I dont know if there wold be any clearance issues with a truck that does. Any feedback is greatly appreciated :metal:

That is really a net idea. What would you charge to make up some templates? I have the stock am/fm in mine and would like to have a nice radio with disk in my glove box. Looks good. I also do not have air. How did you get the door to look like a mirror?
Also, what would you charge to build one in two parts (as in third picture) with radio hole but unfished. In American dollars.

Maybe if I get enough feedback I might think about manufacturing them, :banghead: but right now its in the proto-type stage, I dont want to start promoting this product on this forum, because I like it here :hot: :josh: . I dont know what range this product should sell for?? any suggestions. Material alone is about $20 + time, and you would cut the hole location/ U Paint.


Oh... and I had the glovebox chromed, went to a wrecker and found a clean straight one, that way I could keep my original one intact :gi:

Would something like that work with AC truck?

I believe it is OK to sell to board members. A lot of guys do. You are not running a business but just making these up for board members and believe there are a lot of board members here. Even on the '73-'87 might be interested. The $20.00, is that American? No way could we tell you what you need to charge us. You would just have to figure your material and time + shipping. Shipping would depend on where you live unless you had a flat rate. Again, this is not your business for an income but doing us a favor by building these and selling to us. I really do not think you would have a problem doing this for members of the board only. Does anyone else think any different?

arent the ac hoses, lines, ducts, whatever they are called behind that bump out?

Great looking install! How did you get such clean lines on your bends with the metal? Did you use a small brake? I've designed (on graph paper) a design for my glovebox install a few years ago, I hope to start working on it pretty soon. Doug

Yes I used a metal brake. I have one at the shop. I think a a/c truck would have to be reversed, but then there is not much glovebox area :confused:

I would take one... I dont have access to any type of brakes so I would really appreciate one of these cool mods!!! Put me in line if you decide to make them for board members! I like the idea and your design A LOT!!!

See, there you go. You can help us out and make a few $$ doing it. As I said "It is OK to help board members out and build these for them" They just do not want a business to join our board and start using this board to sell their products. But remember, I think I am first in line. ;)

looks purr t. With my vintage air install, the depth of the actual holding part of the box would need to be way less.
