Here is a pic that Blue85 asked for.

paintpyro 10-11-2005 04:32 PM

Nice. I'd like that with the roof cut off

ebfabman 10-11-2005 04:39 PM

Just a few more hacks.....:)

Bowtiefreak 10-11-2005 04:46 PM

Is the line under the window rolled inwards? That's a great idea.

Putter 10-11-2005 04:48 PM

Sooooo......that is not a structural issue? I mean, why was it there in the first place?

Blue85 10-11-2005 07:03 PM

kool man

ebfabman 10-11-2005 07:06 PM

Its what the tank straps bolted to. It was also a finger smasher when you got your finger behind the seat with someone moving the seat back.....ouch!

86swb 10-11-2005 07:24 PM

I take it you put the tank out back.

ebfabman 10-11-2005 07:41 PM

Absolutely. I never like the idea of sitting next to a tank full of smelly explosive fuel. The extra room is a big plus.

I remember discovering that...and the very next day, my son discovered it too.

I was talking a nap in my truck today thinking about this quest for more space without a total major cab rebuild... and I think ebfabman is the man to talk to on this... have you thought of moving the floor forward a bit? I was looking at the floor, where the flooe is joined to the toe board I guess...what ever you call it, the 54ish degree angle upwards. Has anyone considered making the floor a bit further out, and modding it this direction? I'm thinking it could be done pretty easy and not have any major draw backs. Brake pedal placement may be an issue, but the throttle would be pretty easy, esp in a 71/72 style throttle.

Ever considered this... is it a decent idea... or was I breathing too much POR15 fumes today?

ebfabman 10-11-2005 08:08 PM

I think it could be done without a lot of trouble. Really nothing in the way on the drivers side.

HA HA, used to love punching on it when freinds had their hand there, you just brought back old memories

ebfabman 10-11-2005 08:27 PM

Bowtie, its a piece of 3/8ths round tube welded to the edge all the way across.

CG 10-11-2005 08:36 PM

geeze i wish ebfabman was my neighbor

ebfabman 10-11-2005 08:58 PM

CG, you're in great company up there in your neck of the woods. There seems to be a lot of hardcore truck heads out your way.

70c10 10-11-2005 09:11 PM

ebfabman, what did you use to cut that?. Just curious.

ebfabman 10-11-2005 09:20 PM

I used a plasma cutter and a cut off wheel.

krue 10-11-2005 09:47 PM

I am hunting the "We're not worthy" smiley, but I can't find it. Great work earl.:D

incoma 10-11-2005 09:53 PM

I find it ironic that Putter questions if modifications should be done. That guy only has 10% of his original truck left. Everything else is modified! ...and he questions this...

ebfabman 10-11-2005 10:03 PM

I think he was just asking if it is a structural support area. It isn't but it does provide some support so the rear cab panel doesn't flop around, which could be addressed with a few braces if it is ever a problem.

incoma, how's Edmond Ok these days?

incoma 10-11-2005 10:10 PM

I gotcha ebfabman. I was just giving him a hard time.

Edmond is beautiful, thought I'd rather be in Western NC. My wife and I have only been here for 3 maybe 4 months now, and we like it alot. Weather's nice, and people are awesome. Now I just have to meet some of the local 67-72chevytruck board members and everything will be perfect.

ebfabman 10-11-2005 10:19 PM

have you met brad2 yet?

How much more room does that gain. Also if you don't use a seat with a head rest, is your melon gonna be bangin against the back window?

I measured about ~3" gain when I did this to the spare cab I have (as practice before cutting a perfectly good cab). Yes, your head is going to be closer to the cab window/wall so no headrest could mean collision is possible upon impact. But, FWIW, years ago my head hit the back of the cab from a crash in a truck w/o this modification & a stock bench seat.

Nice work Efabman. Mine looks primative compared to yours. I didn't finish it out or anything though..... I just did the initial cut to see how things would clear. I'll finish the 'real' one out & hopefully it will look as nice as yours.

73stepside 10-11-2005 10:53 PM

i don't mean to hijack this thread but maybe flush mounting the front and back windows will give a infinitely small amount of space and most of the rest of the metal around the back can be taken out and reshaped to fit closer to give another infinitely small amount of space
