Nice sounding mufflers?

Well, it finally happened. One of the old rusty glasspacks on my truck finally rotted through, and the other one is about 2 weeks from doing the same. The entire exhaust system is brand new duals from the manifolds back, but the previous owner put on some old rusty glasspacks. Now, long story short I have a truck that kinda has that bad glasspack/straight pipe/exhaust leak sound going for it. What does everyone run for mufflers that flow good, have a nice tone but not too noisy for a driver and aren't too much money? I have been looking into Thrush glasspacks and turbo mufflers, and also Dynomax Ultra Flows and Flowmaster 40s. I haven't priced any of these out yet, but they all look like they flow good. Anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks!

I have MAGNAFLOW's on "GQ", the HOOKER areo chamber's sound good 2 ;)

matthufham 10-13-2005 05:35 PM

flowmaster 40's, not delta flow flowmaster 40's, that's a big difference. the 40 series are louder.

I have dynomax super turbos, they're not as loud as flowmasters, but still sound good.

Just put cherry bombs on mine.

I have straight thru pipes from headers into resonator tips with rear exit...Kinda loud!!!! n rusted. When rebuilding plan to use the LMC system (non glasspack) for a more mellow sound....

Flowmasters are good, couple of friends have had Edelbrock glasspacks that have blown the glass through the back end. May not be a product issue though, may have been mismatched products?? flowrates etc? However they have moved to Flowmasters on their rides and won't be changing back.....

Cheers
Lee

I dont like glasspacks. I think they sound like crap. I'd def. put turbo mufflers on it.

Joe67 10-13-2005 07:33 PM

Flowmaster :metal:

vtblazer 10-13-2005 07:33 PM

For a big block, it's gotta be a 70 series flow master, IMO
For small blocks on the cheaper end, I like the Dynamax 'super turbos' they have an extra chamber and sound reall good, once again IMO... :)

I'm using the Flowtech AfterBurners and couldn't be more pleased. Not as loud as Flowcrappers.
LUV2XCLR8 is right, the Hooker Areo Chambers do sound good. I was thinking about those, but went with the AfterBurners . I got them from Summit for $40 bucks a piece.

You should take measurements to make sure whatever muffler you do go with they can make the distance between pipes, so you won't have to weld any gap piping.

Do you know how long your old Packs were(are)?

anybody using the FlowMaster-50 series mufflers?
I too am looking for something not too loud, but not so quiet that it kills performance.
I am considering the above from summit....2.5" version
Apprieciate any input...dont mean to steal the thread either....

That would be me. I have 50's and dual catback system on my 96 and I love them. Inside the cab you just barely here a rumble unless you stomp on it. I am told it is very nice, some say a little loud from the outside. I never hear it from the outside, but even cruisin in the 70-80 range, it is just a nice rumble. You know you got them, but they won't drive you nuts on long drives. I definitely felt the chnge going from the stock system far as the power goes.

luv my 40 series flowmasters

Jim_PA 10-13-2005 08:53 PM

I was a big flowmaster guy, and for the first time tried a set of magnaflows. I like them much better!

Derrickbwg 10-13-2005 08:53 PM

My flowmasters are way to loud imo. I only have the stock insulation and it's to loud to use a phone with with the window down at 45....that's annoying. Not that I live on the phone while I drive but I do use it. Plus, long trips just plain wear you out from the noise, add to the noise a radio that you have to blast to even hear and the enviroment is not fun. Conversations are carried out just below a shout. They sound cool but you have to give up a lot just to be loud(won't be a problem for some) :) I'd rather sound like a new vette!

I have a Stainless Flowmaster 50 series single in dual out on my 5.3l GMC Sierra. It may not have the same sound as an older setup, but here is a sound clip if you are interested

texascowboy593 10-13-2005 09:06 PM

40 series flows w/ 2 1/2 pipedown at a 75 degree angle just b4 rear axle hooked to flowtech headers... at idle in gear (500 rpm) nice and quiet but people next to you know you got a pair. When its time to gas on it and move at a high rate of fuel consumption, the cops WILL notice you! :metal:

Bowtiefreak 10-13-2005 09:12 PM

Dynomax Ultraflows
Flowmaster
Magnaflow
Hooker Areo Chambers
Dynomax Super Turbos
Spintechs
Edelbrock
Borla
All of these are VERY good mufflers. Some are a little louder than others, but again, are VERY good mufflers. Adding an X or H pipe makes a difference in sound levels on each of these mufflers but the addition of a crossover pipe of either style is worth the effort.

My truck us not on the road yet, I ran imco's on my 67 chevelle they sound allot like flowmaster without the cost!!

I have the Flowmaster 50s with headers on my 70 and they sound great. Not very loud in the cab but they sound good shooting out the back.

Dynomax Super Turbos

Looks like my choices are fairly limited as I measured tonight..... I have dual 2" exhaust with a 24" long glasspack on each side. The glasspacks kind of have offset angled ends on them, and I doesn't look like a regular muffler would even fit in there. It is right before the rear axle. Hopefully I can figure something out, but it sure doesn't look like I have a lot of choice at the moment.

Aquivarious 10-14-2005 01:17 AM

I used to have flowmaster 40s on my old 85,and IMO they sounded so much better that the glasspacks i imploded (dont ask, i still trying to figure that one out).

I say if you put new mufflers on, doesnt matter the pattern or length, just remount the rear sections of exhaust! Shouldnt be too hard unless somethings in the way...
