Lighted cigar lighter

I know I been arguing with Fast and a few others on this subject, but now i see what y'all were talking about.
I thought you were meaning that it had a lit ring around it...like an import. (silly me) I had no idea you ment it was lit from within.
I was under the dash of the new Longhorn a few min ago, and saw a harness I had never seen before going to the cigar lighter. I got to lookin at it, and bigger than sh!t, it had a light clipped to it.
Don't I feel like an @ss now.

I just purchased a new lighter assy. It has a red wire,(hot to lighter), and a blue wire, (hot to the light). No where near close to lighting it off, so I don't know what it looks like.

Longhorn Man 04-08-2002 03:45 AM

I see the picture isn't showing up...I hope photo-i gets there sh!t together soon...
The light filters down through the spaces in the lighter body, and shows when you pull out the lighter. It is wired in with the dash lights.
I'll say that i have and dificulty finding where the lighter goes when I'm haulin @ss on the freeway at night.
Mostly, it's kinda cool.

I checked mine and there is only a red wire. Was this an option?

I never seen an option code for this, and my Longhorn has no option packages, but has no lighted lighter on the list either. I wonder if yours (like my 2 priviouse trucks) had a replacement one put in there and a modified harness. I coulda sworn the old Longhorn was original.

From the left to right, you have the bulb holder, the collar, the inner sleve, and the trim ring.
The bulb holder snaps into the collar, which is also the ground for the whole asembly. Cool huh?

So, excuse my stoopidness but where does the light come from and what purpose does it serve? Does it come out of the hole that you shove the push button hot thing into and then turn off when the hot thing is installed?

bobs409 04-10-2002 12:27 PM

You could quit smoking. LOL Best thing I ever did for myself but that's a different topic. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/smile.gif

Im going to take another look at mine just to be sure. The lighter element/knob is original as it matches the wiper/headlight knobs but not sure on the housing. I was just surprised that it still worked! Everything works on this truck. This is the one I paid $50 dollars for. hee hee

I hope I have that light! I like little surprises like that.

My '69 Chevelle has a fiber optic ashtray light that was cool to find. They don't really work well but really amazed me when I first found it.

That is cool! I been looking at my ash try assembly and trying to figure how to light it up so I will stop ashing on the floor.

I'd skip the fiber optic in that case. You can hardly tell it's even lit. Shouldn't be hard to rig in a small bulb though.

The repro Chevelle parts vendors have that fiber optic available for about $10. You get the line and a special socket attached that simply replaces one of your speedometer lights. When your speedometer lights up, that light is transferred down the line. I doubt they ever used this on the trucks though.

Yesterday I completely removed my cigarette lighter and it doesn't have any light. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/board/ubbhtml/frown.gif Looks stock to me.

They used the fibr optic thingy to light the gear indicator. There was a thread on this last week. 2 of the 3 trucks I have had, had it working

So it must be optional. I've added it to my "check for" list when I hit the junkyards.

I get a kick out of the armrests above. LOL It's a good thing they provided the seats huh? Maybe charge extra for the steering wheel? The funny thing is most of these options were probably a few dollars! People must have been tight wads back then. LOL

Everyone should have the fire extinquisher! (doesn't have to be original) I added one to my truck one day when I drove by a car on fire. That opened my eyes.

I mounted mine on the passenger side kick panel. Im not going to lose my truck to fire, don't lose yours!
