5 on the tree??
Just out of curiousity, my newest purchase has a 3 on the tree, and I was thinking about possible future projects, does anyone know if its possible to make the linkage work for a NV4500 or if someone makes such a linkage? Or is such an idea too far fetched:crazy: , and the floor shifter would be the only way to make it work?

Sounds cool to me, if you find one let me know!

Re: 5 on the tree??
I know that in the biscayne's & some other vehicles you could get a saginaw 3-speed with an OD unit (electric), with some slight modification you can mount the OD unit to a 4 speed...from there its just adapting the linkage to work with 4 gears instead of 3 and you've got a 4+1..

Re: 5 on the tree??
With enough skill you can do anything, but that sounds like a real challenge!

Re: 5 on the tree??
Doesn't an NV4500 already come with a shifter that bolts to the top of the tranny? The old 3 speeds have the shifter linkages on the outside of the tranny so it could be a 3 on the tree, or you could convert it to an externaly mounted floor shift. I believe all the NV4500 shifting mechanisms are inside the tranny, so I'd be led to believe that this would not even be possible. Flame me if I'm wrong:lol:

Re: 5 on the tree??
I don't know how that would be possible with a newer transmission the way they shift.
Edit: posted at the same time..... ;) but yeah that's what I meant.. .all the shifting is done internally on most of this newer stuff. |
Re: 5 on the tree??
could you make the 4 + 1 setup work with a transfer case though? I thought the only 4 speeds offered with a 4x4 were 3 speeds with creepers?

Re: 5 on the tree??
A guy told me that IH offered "5 on the tree" in something they made? Don't remember exactly what it was............I thought that would be a neat swap too.
I always liked 3-on-the-trees, Last one we had I had to put on the floor because of a Cummins going under the hood:( Hopefully, I can find another truck with one in, I'd really like a 3/4 ton with a 292/3 on the tree:lol: |
