WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
Looking to buy a new front driveshaft for my 71/72 K20. Need one that the slipjoint is working properly and is not bent. Having good U-joints would be good too.
BTW, does anybody know if a 'stock' front driveshaft will allow for a 4" lift?? Thanks, 72longbed |

Hey 72 Longbed
If you can use a "used" front driveshaft, I have a few laying around. Takes time to do these things doesn't it. GM72K10 |

I have a front shaft from a 72 blazer that had a 3 speed trans...It may be longer than the pickup one...If you could get me a measurement close,I will check mine...If it will work...$60 shipping included...Thanks,Erick And my 69 K/20 had a 6 inch lift with stock shaft...worked fine... |
Re: WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
GM72K10,
Hey Gerry, how ya' been? It's good to hear from you again. A used shaft is OK as long as the slipjoint is not siezed up and works in and out freely and the tube is straight. Send me a PM with your phone number and I'll call to set up a time to stop over. BTW, do you have any of those transfer case boot rings that hold the rubber boot to the floor? Thanks, 72longbed |

bisquik65,
thanks for the info on the shaft. If I can't find one local, I'll be back to you on that measurement. Thanks, 72longbed |
Re: WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
From what I remember when I got mine all the front shafts were the same length between blazers and pickups (I have a 3-spd blazer). Of course the used one I bought is still in the box because I have not made it that far along in my Blazer's resurrection. I will see if I can't confirm it for you tomorrow.

Re: WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
I took a measurement yesterday of the front drive shaft distance and it is approxiametly 30.25" from back of U-joint cup at the transfer case to back of opposite U-joint cup at the Dana 44 (deepest length). Now here's the thing though :( ; the cab, front clip, and transmission are not in the frame right now so I don't know how much more the frame will settle down and if that will change the length dramatically. The frame has a new 4" Tough Country spring lift on it so the springs are pretty stiff right now. From what I have read on this Board, the 'slipjoint' should allow for some variation in ride height?? Yes or No??
Thanks, 72longbed |
Re: WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
I use a SJ 4'' lift on my 72 4x4, no problems with the front drive shaft. I don't recommend extreme four wheeling.

Re: WTB Front 4x4 Driveshaft
You have to worry more about the rear shaft, front one is cool! I have a bigger lifted 68, about 9" total, and the rear shaft looks to be a little short and not the front. 9 inches taller than my stock 68 4x4. The only bearing hard to swap is the little one in the center of the double joint. I just rebuilt my front shaft.
