Drum Brakes are a little squishy

I put new drum shoes on the rear, and took off and cleaned the front shoes. Now the pedal is a little more squishy than usual. Manual brakes of course. Book says to do several forward and reverse stops and nothing helped. Ideas?

Did you adjust them at all before you put the drums back on. I ussually adjusthem so there is a very slight rubbing of the shoe to the drum.

LOL! Spoken like a true car guy.
If you don't want to crawl around and adjust them with that agervating star wheel, go into a big parking lot, and drive along in reverse just pumping the brakes. The more you do it, the more they will adjust...that is, if your adjusters still work. The dompe smoking old man couldn't figure out how to re-install them in mine...so he threw them away. Now I get to adjust them every month or 2, and imediatly after any heavy towing.
I hate that man.

adjustors threads probably frozen, hope you unforze them and cleaned threads with wire brush and used anti-sieze or pipe thread dope on them while you were in there,.
also try bleeding through some nice new fluid through the system,.

lol @ longhornmail

Last time I adjusted mine was when I was putting new grease seals in. I adjusted the shoes until they touched the drum, and then backed them off a tiny bit. That did the trick.

those adjusters are only $6 bucks a pop...
and the left and right sides are threaded differently...
if the pedal was squishy, you might wanna bleed them puppies...

Twilightoptics 07-11-2002 12:35 AM

I bled all of them. Got a little better. I'll try that parking lot in reverse thing. The adjusters spin just fine and I had it to where I could just barely get the drum on (slight rub) So I guess It's time to drive in reverse!!
