Door locking procedure
 

Can someone describe the procedure to lock the doors on a 72 GMC pickup, I have tried everything and cant get them to lock, close as I can come is turning the key with the door closed and it locks but after I remove the key you can unlock the door by opening it normally heh

You may need to adjust the key mechanism,you will need to remove the door panel and look inside and see what is going on there,Is this the same on both doors?I have to shut my door and lock it with the key,Is your key mech. lined straight up and down?

Not really sure I got my kid messing with it right now I will take a closer look at it tomorrow, I had him remove the door covers so we could lube things up good in the doors the window was getting stiff and the lock was stiff.

So normally to lock you close the door then use the key to lock it?

You dont push the lock down then hold in the thumb as you shut the door?

I also have to close my door and lock it with the key.

I am pretty sure this is how all of them are set up... took me a long time to get used to it popping up if I just pressed the button.

in my '67 I have to close the doors then lock them with the key aswell.

Try pushing on the door as you turn the key. I have one side where the weatherstripping still pushes out on the door, and I have to push on the door when I turn the key to lock it.

One key and this "key in door" locking proceedure prevent lock-outs.It`s not that people are smarter,now.(obviously the opposite).But,all the revenue gained for locksmiths and the chance to offer a satelite system to help you in your vehicle would be lost.Can`t have that!
I had to get used to not putting the key in the door to lock it.Someone had to show me to just push in the button.Now,can someone explain how I can get my horn to honk when i hold my fob up and squeeze it?

I had a friend with the same problem. He kept thinking he locked the door but when you push the handle it would unlock. I tried pusing on the door and then locking it at the same time and the door actually locked then.

Driver's door on my 67 is the same way. PS is ok, but when I "aligned":lol: the DS door and put new weatherstripping on it I've had to lock it that way ever since.:crazy:

Ok then whats the problem that you have to push in the door to make it lock their must be a adjustment you can make?

My passenger door is the same. I turn the key and it seems to click, but really doesn't. I have to almost bend the key to get it the rest of the way to finally make the sound of the locking. Plan on lubing the lock and mechanism and see if that helps.

I wonder if something has just enough wear on it that it will not lock then?

I lubed everything inside the door up really well things do move much easier.

I would bet the door lock itself is OK, since he can turn it fine. It has to be in the linkage, door adjustment, or the latching mechanism.

Had one truck you could lift up on the door and it would work fine for a while. Weak behind the hinge.

I had the same problem with mine. You go to lock the door with the key (they are all like that as mentioned) but the lock button won't pull down far enough to actually lock the door. But, if you try the same process with the door open the lock works. After dinking around with mine awhile we figured out the little star wheel on the door that engages the latch mechanism on the door jamb created a wear pattern on the same teeth after 30+ years of opening and closing. The door lock star wheel simply toggles back and forth on the same teeth it doesn't rotate to the next tooth everytime the door is opened or closed. I believe there are six or eight teeth on the door side lock wheel. With the door open, push the button in on the door handle on the outside and rotate the star wheel one notch, close the door and try to lock the door with the key. Repeat this process until it locks with the key. This allows you to get the original wear pattern back in line between the door striker and the door latch.

Sounds good I will give it a try, I also have a 86 Suburban thats locks work perfect wonder if they will work in my 72 doors?

The burb also has power locks has anybody rigged up power locks in their older trucks ?

Had the same problem on my son's (orangeuavol) Blazer. Worn part in latch it's self. Fix --weld worn part and grind back to orginal shape-cost-a little time.

Is there any way to change stuff around so I can just push the knob down and it will stay locked even after I close it?

Water gettin`inside the door over the years can make the sliders a little crusty.They can use a little scuffing up then grease.
