FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
My name is Jason and I inherited my Grandfather's old '86 C-10. I'm actually a Jeep guy (1999 TJ, 2004 KJ) but I couldn't pass on picking up the chevy. It needs some work since it has been sitting outside for the last 5 years and not driven at all.
Long story short, it had the origional 4.3L ripped out and a 305 put in but kept the stock tranny (3speed auto) and radiator. The truck runs, but it seems like it doesn't have any power. Its got Eidelbrock 4bbl carb & intake and borla exaust but no balls... My question is what kind of tranny would some of you experts recommend replacing the stocker with? TH400? 350? Is the V6 radiator going to work well enough with the 305 or am I going to have to worry about overheating problems? |
Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
welcome from tenn and a 700 would be great but a 350 would handle it easily

Welcome to the board from South MIssissippi. Any tranny in good mechanical condition should stand up to a 305.

Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
There is the question of gearing also. I'm sure that the OE trans is geared to the V6. What are most of you guys running in a 2WD work truck? Ultimately this will become my project/daily driver - I'm not looking to take it to the strip or anything.

Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
hey there. The gearing for a V6 would be better since it needs more help to move the truck than a V8 ,try a 200r4

Welcome to the board from California.
If this truck will become your daily driver and you are planning a tranny swap already, I would use a OD trans like the 700 R4 or the 200 4R that was previously stated. |
Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
And what is the wheel bolt pattern for this truck?

Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
Welcome, I will let others who know the later model trucks answer your questions.

Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
I know its 5 lug, but what is the spacing of the bolts? 5x4.5"? 5x 5.5"? 5x5"?

BTW, I'm partial to 700R4s. The later models are desired more since they have been 'factory'-updated from the earlier offerings. |
Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
Your biggest reason for having no power is that 305 :P
They arn't well suited for a truck :( If you want power, get a 350 :) |
Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
I have an '86 with a 305. Its a slug.
If your truck has a 3 speed automatic, it is probably a TH350 or TH350C (lockup torque converter). There is no need to change it unless you want overdrive. Slonaker |
Re: FNG in Michigan needs some answers/help
Welcome to the board. :) Also look at the rear gearing as well. As others mentioned the 305 is a alright engine for to and from but a 350 would defintely be a step up. But then it may be needed for a new radiator depending on how much core capacity it has.
The TH350 would be a ideal replacement for it but a TH400 would also be good. 700r4 with lower gear ratio like 3.73 or larger numerical may be better but depends on what your use of the truck will be. |
