283 in an 82 Fleet
I recently bought an 82 with a 283. Came with a 305, but was pulled & a 454 put in. The guy I bought it from pulled the 454 & put the 283 in to pull his camper. What do you guys think about it? Not looking to burn up the streets, but would like to have a decent amount of power. It has about 500 miles on it. So I haven't really stretched it out yet. Gonna change the oil ( Castrol:no: ) in it now. Gonna put Havoline in it.

A 283 is a good motor. torque to the wheels will be determined by trans and rear gear ratio.

Re: 283 in an 82 Fleet
The 283 was a good motor in it's time and still is. The cubic inches and size will be your deciding factor on how well you do with this motor. It should do well on gas mileage overall, h owever if you work it to get speed or pulling something, it will gobble gas as good as the best of them. I have a friend with a 76 4X4 that has a six cyllinder in it. Great truck for climbing hills and going to the field, but it is lacking in the long hauls with a trailer connected to it. I have seen little ladies pass it on a hill.

Re: 283 in an 82 Fleet
No pics yet. Been raining lately. Will get some this week. The guy had put 305 heads on it for the mounting holes. In the process, he put valve covers on both heads with PCV valves. Meaning NO OIL filler. Had to put the oil in through the PCV hole! My dad has some 305 covers at his shop. Just need to get the gaskets. Probably do it this weekend. Anyway, just curious what you guys thought about the 283.
